What steering coloum can i use? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

HI guys I am real new to this Chevy stuff since i am a Ford tech but please don't hold this against me! I need some help. I recently got from my father who bought it new a 1971 c10. basic as you can get, no power anything. I already have injected 350 going in with 700r4. I need to know what steering coloum I can use and what steering box. Thanks alot guys you have an awsome site here!

oh sorry want later model coloum with tilt and auto coloum shift. and power steering. truck now 3 on tree manual sterring.

Since you probably don't want a column mounted ignition switch found on later model columns your best bet is to locate an original 67-72 truck tilt column or a mid-70's van titl column. The Van tilt will require minor modifications but it looks exacly like the OE truck tilts and does not have an ignition switch. These are always on e-bay and often on our parts board as well.

As for the PS gearbox, any up through 1980 or 81 is a direct bolt on.

Actually if a later model column would fit would prefer it but don't know which years. doesn't bother me if it has column ign or dash. Its getting all late model drivetrain and new interior. It will be a weekend driver for my wife and I and be pass on to my son in a few years.

CPNE was just trying to save you some real heartache relocating the ignition.

There are lots of outfits that rebuild columns like he suggested/ They usually run about $200- 250. It's really the easiest way to go.

I used to own a F%$D myself, I still suffer the nightmares.

I ended up using a column from a 85 in one of my project trucks, it took some modification, but it looks pretty good.

Welcome again from South Mississippi. I Have seen late model columns used, but you will be completely rewireing your truck...Not to say that uis bad, but you will really be reenginneering the lights, wipersd ignition and who knows what depending on the year column you get and waht gadgets are there. Styaying with the original non-igniton type saves you a WHOLE BUNCH of work.

There are adapters to go from the crescent connector to late model connector. Then all that's left is to wire wipers and lights.
