I get that, but what about not being able to tow in OD with it like someone else had said...that's probably not going to work...Will I be able to tow at 65?

Re: Tranny for towing

ya towing in OD is not good on them you could just put it in third and tow without your rpms being that high and have it in the powerband

Re: Tranny for towing

didn't take it as being mean...I just want to be able to tow at 65 towing 7,000 lbs max and I already have a 700r4....if the 700r4 won't do it, then it won't do it...I just don't want to spend all that money and time looking for a 4l80e when the 700r4 will work...

Re: Tranny for towing

Eh I'm not a expert tranny guy the 700 will do it but the 4l80Is the better pulled because of less overdrive of .75 and the right rearend gears

Re: Tranny for towing

When the torque converter is unlocked lots of heat is generated.

Re: Tranny for towing

you know I've been reading up on the 4l80e and the 700r4 and I've read many times that it will cause more heated unlocked...the funny thing is that there's another site for diesels that I frequent almost as much as here, and they say to not tow locked up...lol...funny...I think I'll stick to the info over here instead...

anyways, if you want to tow locked up and you want to be locked up for gas mileage, why would you want to unlock the convertor...thanks

Re: Tranny for towing

That tranny needs to be locked up!!!!!!!! You are not putting the power to the ground and wasting a lot of fuel and putting a lot of wear on the tranny!

As for the 700R4, I would have one built and run with it! I drove a 6.2 Diesel with a built 700 that locked up at the top of 2nd and really snapped a shift and man was it nice! Between the low 1st gear and the tall 4th and the fact that it is a very light (lbs) trans it is a good deal all around, just make sure the right guy builds it right the first time and be done with it.

Re: Tranny for towing

so why would you want to unlock it...what would the reasoning behind that be?
