Cool Longhorn Bed Wood

Longhorn Bed Wood Has anyone recently replaced the bed wood in a longbed or longhorn?

I am preparing to replace the original decking in my bed and have not yet found a source for the new material. I can purchase red oak 1 x 8 lumber locally for around $4 a lineal foot (80 total feet req'd). This method would using my router to cut the groove along each edge of the boards. I would still have restore the metal strips and buy alot of hardware.

Buying an entire kit may be easier and cheaper in the long run. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Longhorn Bed Wood

I just recieved mine. It cost me like 486 for the whole kit and like 75 in shipping and handling from brothers. After recieving it and going through it, I was glad I bought the kit. It came with everything and the pine wood boards are all predrilled. It took a month and a half to get sent to me. I thought it was a little funny though; I purchased the bed from Brothers and it came to me on truck freight from MAR-K. I was cool with that, because MAR-K is a site supporter, so I was able to give back. I wanted the walnut kit, but 2000 dollars just was way too much. I recommend a Kit. Good Luck.

Making your own really just depends on your source and cost of wood. Weather you like doing that kind of stuff. Advantages are you can choose the wood you prefer. Type and Grain etc.

You can do it all without a router. Table saw works just fine. Need a Forstner Bit if having exposed holes. If you have to go to a high priced lumber store your better off buying a kit. But if you have a good source. I did one with red oak where I cut the trees down and dried and plained it when I lived in Georgia. Wood was free. Their are plenty of sights with dimensions and info on how to. Its fun to make your own.
