knocking in engine....it's over....
Well ladies and gents.....here is the outcome of the trip back home to get my truck looked at. was on my way home to San Antonio from San Marcos and knocking was still present, it made it to about selma when the oil pressure dropped and the kocing got louder and was accompanied with a squeking sound. Luckily my girlfreind followed me, so I got off the express way and onto the access road, hoping I could push it till I got home, it stopped at the first stop sign and then wouldn't turn over. I got it started again and took a turn into a parking lot. I had it towed the rest of the way to my place.
I cranked it up for my mechanic and he said that it sounded like the conecting rods. Which he then referred to it as "A major Problem" He recommended that I rebuild it. But he is still gonna tear it apart and see what he can do with it. But I don't think I would be secure with only fixing whats broke. But, now that this happened....I'm looking at rebuilding a 350 that my girlfreinds dad said he would give to me. ORRRRR......finding a reputable place that has rebuilt engines, through my mechanic, hes a good guy and he'll help me out. So for the moment, Rusty is back where he was about three months ago...sitting at my parents place. AS soon as my dad gets back from Mexico, he said he would help me with what ever I decide to do. This really sucks...and it pains me to see my truck the way it is, but at least I'm ok....and at least nothing worse happened like my cat getting i'll or such. Thanks for your help all who resonded to my first post in the Engine Drivetrain board. Back to square one, but at least everything else on my truck works. Anyne got a freshly rebuilt 350???or maybe know where I can get a quality rebuilt 350 in San Antonio or Austin, TX????

Good luck with the engine replacement. The quickest thing I can think of would get you in big trouble...borrow "Blues" motor for a bit

Ouch...at first I thought that looked alot like my truck...makes me very uncomfortable seeing them on the end of a hook like that! You should be able to find a decent used motor to get you by for cheap...then take yours apart and do it right. Take your time and figure out what that drunk did wrong. Most of your parts should still be good. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

You have my condolences on the passing of your small-block; I guess now you'll just have to go and get yourself a hi-po engine that you've always wanted, right? The beauty of the small block Chevy is the almost endless possibilities for a rebuild or ready to bolt up package, from mild to wild. Heck, up here I can get a decent used 350 for $400 or less, I'm sure you could do the same.Whatever your pocketbook and time allows. Best of Luck

You could do a new GM crate for roughly $1200, a little more or less depending on your dealer and if you use your old 350 (is it a 350?) as a core or not.
If you've gotta get it on the road quickly, I bet you could find someone throwing away a 305 just because they're putting something better in its place...and I'd take a running 305 over a broken 350, especially if the 305 was free-to-dirt cheap.

That sucks! I hate to see a 67-72 hooked up to a tow truck unless it's a new project!

Im in the northeast and the guys i know up here swear by Jasper Rebuilt engines. Years ago my ex had a windstar minivan which they installed one of them things in it and it ran great til she traded it in a couple years later. In the event i trade my 250 in for a 350 ill probably order a Jasper too

You could install a Caddy big block.
Did the tow truck driver look at you like your some kind of crack head when you were taking pics of it hooked up? Some ppl just don't understand. |

Has anyone done a compression check? Did you check the water/oil? Could be something as simple as a blown head gasket. Yes they can sound like you have thrown a rod.
