66 GMC Suburban..

Hey,

Im relatively new to this message board so I'm still not quite familiar with everyone or all the tons of info here yet, so forgive me if i ask something that has already been asked before.

first off.. does anyone know if anything other than the powerglide my suburban already has (that is really really tired) will bolt up to its 305 v-6? I've never had the trans out, or seen any pictures online to compare bell-housings with.

I will post some pic's of it on here as soon as i can.

Re: 66 GMC Suburban..

The gmc engines had an adapter for the auto trannys. The bolt patterns are different. If its already an auto setup you should have the adapter pieces you need. Just ditch that piece and put a SBC in there. Much better that way.

Re: 66 GMC Suburban..

Keep the original 305 V6, instead of replacing with a sbc. Although they are not rare, they are seldom seen in original form and in the original truck they came in. With regards to your tranny question, the adapter you have will accept a Powerglide, Turbo 350 or Turbo 400, to name a few, so you are not limited to the Powerglide currently in it. To maintain the original integrity of the Suburban, I would have the Powerglide and 305 V6 freshened up, if needed, in order to keep the truck original, as well as, preserving the value. An unmolested survivor, with the original running gear is becoming, nearly extinct, so you have a bit of an oddity with the factory 305 V6 and Powerglide combination. Good luck and let's see some photos.

Re: 66 GMC Suburban..

Hi and welcome! NICE Suburban by the way.

I'm just getting acquainted with the 305 V6 myself- but already I love the engine.

Mountains of torque- mild mannered, and even though I read that they're gas hogs- my 305 truck gets better mpg than my 250 truck with a 4.56 rear.

I'd say, if the engine runs well, there'd be no reason to rip it out for a 350 (unless you really want a 350 instead). there's a few guys on here with that motor, seems they're over on 6066GMC as well, so you'll probably be able to get responses on either site.

Enjoy that truck, whatever you decide to do with it!

Re: 66 GMC Suburban..

Welcome from another Burb guy.
Saw your truck in the other thread, very nice truck, a real survivor.
If the adapter accepts a 350 turbo it will accept a 700r4.
Not sure what gear you're running but the overdrive really improved my drive-ability.

Thumbs up Re: 66 GMC Suburban..

Yeah, as far as i can tell the rear end gears are 3.55:1, and its a posi. It also has factory power steering and power brakes. its pretty sweet, some small dents here and there, minor rust, but nothing major.

Has anyone with a GMC ever had a fuel gauge problem with the needle always pointing at full, even though you know its on empty? sometimes it kicks back and reads, but its not reliable at all.

I've recently rebuilt the brake system too, just about everything from master-cyl. to wheel cyl. is new. when i got it, it had a holley 350 2 bbl on it, and when it puked i could not find a refresh kit, so i bought a 500, it seems to have taken that swap pretty well too.

I've thought it over, and i dont plan on changing the engine though. its unique, like some of you said. it suits me fine.
