Spark Problem
We are having problems with the spark on a buddy of mines 72 truck. It's a big block, with HEI. Distributer has enough spark to make a pale yellow spark if a screwdriver is held in the spark plug boot and held close to ground, but not with the plug.
With a plug (grounded) it will not spark, and when a timing light is connected to the plug wire, it will not even have enough spark to kick off the timing light. Now...the interesting part. Take the distributer out, clamp a ground on the vacuum advance, and put the power wire on... It sparks fine when you rotate the gear. Put it back in the engine, clamp the ground to it...same setup...nothing. Any ideas here? We are really having difficulty with it. Steve, We got the suggestion to clean the area where the dist seat, and we will try that next, but we did have a jumper cable going from the battery to the negative on the battery. HELP!!!!

What and where is your power supply feeding the dizzy coming from?

We have tried the normal yellow wire to the HEI, and then went straight to the battery with the yellow...no luck.

the normal yellow wire going to the distributior is a resistance wire that you cant use for hei get a new piece of wire

OK...we will swap that out. We did have a seperate piece of standard wire going straight from the battery to the distributor, when we tried it, though. No spark still...
This is an awesome database of information... I appreciate the responses. Please give us more ideas.

Have yall had any luck. I would think that the engine is not grounded somehow. I know you have done this allready. He said that the oil line was grounding??? Something like that.

Are you using the distributor-to-manifold gasket? I've heard of the dist. grounding itself out if one isn't used.

I don't believe we have a gasket on it, but the distributor would ground against the clamp, cam, and other things...wouldn't it...shouldn't it?

try running a 10 gauge wire with spade connectors from the "BATT" terminal, to "IGN UNFUSED" on the fuse block

We'll try the suggestions this weekend and report back on the progress. Please keep any ideas coming. I have been a shadetree mechanic all my life, but this one has me stumped.
