Question Building my first motor

Ok im a body man and pretty well clueless about what goes with what on building a motor so any help would be great. I have a 1970 c/10 with a stock 350 3 speed transmission (3 on the tree) 2 wheel drive. Its got a bad knock most likely a spun bearing so I gotta tear the motor apart so while its apart I wanna build... well what I call a cruise motor. Fun to drive grabs everyones attention and the sound of it pulling up to a show or on a cruise night sticks in your mind.

The only motor mods are headman hedders and an edelbrock 600 cfm performer series carburater (part # 1405).

I want to put a Comp Cam Thumpr cam kit in this motor, the kit number is gk12-600-8. It comes with Hydraulic Roller Lifters and a Gear Drive Timing System. The cam is a 283THR7 = Duartion 283/303 Duration @.050 227/241 Valve Lift .513/.498 Lobe Lift .3420/.3320

Other than changing springs and installing a thrust button (whatever that is) what else is going to need to be changed I would like to keep the rest of the drive train stock as much as possible.

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated this truck is my baby and i just want to build it right

Re: Building my first motor

i'd recommend moving this to the engine and drivetrain section......more likely to get a lot of responses there

before doing any taking apart// get a bokk and read the proper way to disasasemble a motor for rebuilding then read more on how to properly approach the rebuiling process

Re: Building my first motor

Well for one thing with that roller camshaft you're gonna need some better valve springs. Whatever the specs that come with your cam should give you an idea what you should use.

Good luck!

Re: Building my first motor

That's good advice about getting the book before starting your project. The cam you've chosen is pretty big, and IMHO, too much cam for an otherwise stock truck slated to cruising duty. If you wanted to keep it simple, I would recommend a 262 Voodoo hydraulic flat tappet cam/lifter kit. I installed one in a buddies 327 Vette. It sounds nasty at idle, and really woke the engine up, compared to the old Cam Dynamics cam it replaced. The 262 will offer a healthy idle, good vacuum, and excellent throttle response. It will also be easier to tune and keep tuned, which will add to the enjoyment factor. Just my $.02

Re: Building my first motor

I would recommend using your current carb and headers and doing this,

9.5:1 compression
vortec heads, screw in studs, 1.5 roller rockers
comp cams XE 268 hydraulic flat tappet cam
edelbrock performer intake
HEI

This should make a great daily driver combo with power peaking from 5000-5500, and you should have plenty of torque, probably close to 400 ft lbs.

The thumper cams sound great, but you'll need a higher static compression ratio to run it and a better head to take advantage of the increased valve lift.

Re: Building my first motor

First of all you should take the block and crank to the machinist and have them looked over. The mains most likely can be line bored but the crank could be to far gone. If every thing checks out, follow through with your build. I would go with the vortec heads like 67ss said. They breath so much better. Plus they are pleantyful and most likely can be found at a decent salvage yard at a better price than having you 70 heads worked.

X2. This is pretty much the setup I have, but I have closer to 10:1 compression, and not as good of heads. The guy who built my motor said it prob makes about 300 hp, and if I change to vortec heads it would be closer to 400 hp. I have 2 1/2" dual flowmaster 40 mufflers with turndowns right after the muffler. Here is a sound clip with a 4000 rpm rev and a shutdown/start up:

I agree with the above posters get a book, do it right, have fun, and if you store it seal it up good (I didn't and I had to rebuild it a second time since water got in it!). good luck

Re: Building my first motor

Amazon.com: How to Build Max Perf Chevy... Amazon.com: How to Build Max Perf Chevy...Amazon.com: How to Rebuild the Small-Block... Amazon.com: How to Rebuild the Small-Block...Those two books are pretty helpful. I think everyone else pretty much helped you get on the right track, i agree on the vortec heads and smaller cam than the one you chose. I would also mark everything when you take it apart, and keep the main bearings in order and take all of that with you to the machine shop. A decent engine builder can tell alot about what was going on with the motor by looking at all that stuff. And have the block magnafluxed to check for cracks.

Re: Building my first motor

I would recommend this book...Amazon.com: How to Rebuild Your Small-Block Chevy... Amazon.com: How to Rebuild Your Small-Block Chevy... When I was seventeen I rebuilt my first small chevy and I didn't know what a thrust button was either.
( It's a metal washer that you weld on to the timing cover to keep the cam from walking bty.) With this book and a good machine shop I had a successful build. It has detailed info and plenty of pics. Also if your going with a hipo motor then pickup a copy of Amazon.com: How to Hotrod Small-Block Chevys:... Amazon.com: How to Hotrod Small-Block Chevys:... Good luck with your build.

Re: Building my first motor

That's is a good book to start with. The autozone in my area sells that book. You might check that out if you don't want to buy it online. I can get you the part # for it.

Re: Building my first motor

I gotta tell ya, the jackass in me wants to say the 2 words every car nerd loves.......

tunnel

ram.

HAHAHAHAHA...I am in fact kidding. But, for cruise night wow factor, a big cam with dual quads through the hood is tough to beat.

HMMMMMMM.. I MUST BE GETTING FORGETFUL IN MY OLD AGE. I DON'T REMEMBER EVER WELDING ANYTHING TO MY TIMMING COVER, & I'VE INSTALLED A COUPLE OF THRUST BUTTON ON CAMS. THEY ARE TO KEEP YOUR CAM FROM WALKING THOUGH. JOHN

John, It is I who is getting old. I just did a search for thrust button on goggle and realized techonolgy has changed. Thrust buttons with needle bearings wow. And yes back in the day on flat tappet motors we welded a washer from the hardware store to the timing cover for cam walk. But my bad thoes thrust buttons don't require welding. Sorry for the scare rew338. Also I just noticed your talking about a roller motor and I was thinking flat tappet.
