There may be a piece of rubber that works as an isolater. After a while, the rubber will deteriorate or wear in two. You will need to split the a arms. On my truck, I didn't have to compress the spring, I just ran a ratchet strap through the center for safety. I jacked the truck up, put it on a stand, put the floor jack under the lower a arm, raised the jack until it just was about to lift the truck off the stand, loosened the lower ball joint bolt, whacked it with a hammer til it came loose, then let the jack down til I could pull the spring.

I've pulled apart 3 front ends and have yet to find a rubber isolator and none of them squeaked. Have you liberally greased both ball joints and both ends of each a-arm? Just for good measure hit the inner and outer tie rod ends.

Re: squeaky coil spring

anothe thing to check is the shock absorber mount//the stud thru the frame rail will loosen up elongating the hole allowing movement and squeaking

Re: squeaky coil spring

Did you check the bushings on the lower control arms? They're probably dry-rotted.

Re: squeaky coil spring

If it's still a stock spring it fits so tight it's not likely to be the cause of the squeak. More likely is ball joint, control arm, sway bar or shock mount bushings. Hit em one at a time with water or wd40 then bounce it a bit to see when the squeak stops then you'll find the source.

Re: squeaky coil spring

I would bet the farm it is a shock, or a control arm bushing

Re: squeaky coil spring

I was having the same issue as well, not only do I believe my control arms were rotted but, once I dropped the coil spring out I had found that a coil had actually broke off of the spring. That leads me to believe that it may also have been the source with the two coils rubbing against one another.

I assumed that the problem had already been diagnosed as a squeaky coil. In fact there are a lot of other possible culprits. I had a broken coil on my 79 Malibu tht would only pop when driving over speed bumps. I couldn't tell it was broken until I tore it down. I also had a 97 Chevy 1/2 ton that had a squeak. It ended uo being worn out sway bar bushings.

It has been a while since I have had a 72 front end apart, but my Malibu had isolators front and rear.

They are steel. Dry rotting is for rubber bushings.
