Question 6 to 5 lug axles

What do I need to do, to swap from a 6 lug to 5 lug axle. (12 Bolt) Is it easier to just change rearend, if so what year, axles are 30 1/16". what year will work? I have heard about having the 6 lug machined. I am concening with the amount of heat being generated on material that has already been heat treated. Won't this warp the axle?

if you have a 70, you can just slide the 71 and up axles into your rear, and slip on new drums.
If your truck is older, it will be easier to get the later rear.
