Wood grain door panel inserts

I was moving some of the truck parts in my garage and was looking at these woodgrain door panel inserts I had stashed away. I believe the first picture is for the 1973 to 1976 trucks. I believe the second picture is for the 1977 to 1979 (1980?). I was trying to remember what trim levels received these wood grain inserts. In the first picture, which trucks got the small wood grain strip and which ones got the full wood grain panel?

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

The "Cheyenne" trim levels would have had the larger woodgrain panels, both in the 73-76 and 77-80 trucks. I had a '75 Scottsdale, and it seems like it had the smaller inserts in it.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

my 76 silverado had the exact same panels as yours at the top in the first photo, but they were trashed and were replaced with a different version.

The bottom inserts pictured match my 77 Cheyenne.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

Is the ring around the 77-80 ones from a Silverado? Seems like my 77 Blazer Cheyenne did not have pull straps.

Jon you are correct. I looked at the insert and didn't pay attention that the trim bezel was indented for pull straps. Yes, that is a Silverado insert

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

I could be wrong But if I remember right the Late model woodgrain inserts on the right were only on the 77' pick-ups, just like the exterior chrome with the Yellow insert was only 77'.

I had a 1977 silverado reg. cab, Short box 4X4 and it had the wood inserts.
I also had a 78' silverado and it had the Aluminum.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

Hayes, I think you are right. I have been doing more research and I think those panel inserts are for 1977 only. I am often amazed at the subtle differences between various years and models. I am glad I am not trying to restore a 1977 truck. It seems there is a lot of unique stuff for those trucks.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

The only 77 I have had was my Blazer, and it had the Cheyenne package. There were no door pulls, the whole ring had the scrolling. I know 78-80 Silverados had an aluminum panel, but wasn't sure about Cheyennes or any other trim package. The Silverados usually had door pulls (I think).

There is no mention of the Silverado package in the '77 Blazer brochure. Suburban and pickups yes, K5 nada.

My '77 Cheyenne K5 is the same as Jonboy mentions. No straps.

The other interesting trim item in '77 was the hood emblem. I'm still trying to figure out if K5's actually had them or not that year. Brochure pictures show it...

Not sure on the hood emblem. My 77 K5 had original paint, but the hood had been changed.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

I think it was the first year for the hood emblem, and power door locks & windows, Delay wipers, etc (new interior)

My door panels were light cream color! (Rare I'm sure)

My '73 Cheyenne Super had the door panels in the top picture from the factory (with the black trim around them).

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

Top panels came on 1973 GMC Sierra Grande's also. I've never seen them repro'd, it must be tough to find a good set.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

I think everyone has posted correct info on these . The Cheyenne package in 77 had a siolid trim ring and the Silverado added the pull straps . One thing I will add is that the top panels are correct for 73-74 and maybe 75 . The panel for 76 uses a different woodgrain pattern (burlwood) and the black trim around the edge is not solid . It is a paisley sort of pattern similar to the tooling in the 77 and up trim rings . I think 76 panel trim would be very hard to find .

Here's a truck, a 74 with the skinny inserts in the middle of the pic in the original post.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

I don't believe the Silverado package was available on the K5 until '79. Even Cheyenne got the silver panels in '78, like was mentioned.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the hood ornament was part of exterior decor package that also included the two-tone hood with striping along the ends.

Re: Wood grain door panel inserts

Not sure how is breaks down year wise, but my '79 is a Scottsdale, and has a hood ornament. It doesn't have the trim band on the cab under the back window, but has the side trim (upper and lower), and no tailgate band.
