Wiring ?

Worked on tail lights and side markers this weekend and ran into a problem with the front side markers. It looks like the the front side markers are not grounded at the light location but carry the ground back to the junction block at the firewall. It seems that this has caused the lights to burn very dim, I believe that the lack of a ground close to the the light is the problem.I am comparing this to the wiring diagram that I down loaded off of a post on this site. I was wondering if anyone has run into this before? And should I ground them at the light location or run down the ground back to the firewall?
