I just had a guy call me, he is looking at a truck to buy, that has NO bed on it. How can he determine if it was a stepside or fleetside bed,...... or does it matter????????
He would prefer to have a step bed.

The best way would be to look at the SPID (glove box) for the model #, a fleet would end with 34 and a step would end in 04. But he can put either bed on it with no probs.

the vin will also tell you once you decode it

the vin wont tell you anything about the bed on a chevy. If there is a 4 in the 4th digit, then that tells you it had a bed originally... that's it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html
