Hi guys I have just bought me a 68 C10 250 with a 3 speed and a nice 12 bolt rear end don't know the ratio yet. I am having trouble identifying my tranny I believe it is a saginaw it has a 4 bolt side cover and a 5 bolt tail house cover the only numbers I have found on it are 3830210 and 7 3844357. If I can ID this thing I would like to rebuild it. Once I do this I need an exploded view or some kind of manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a 4 bolt side cover, its an old "2 pin muncie), non syncro 1st gear. The saginaw has a 7 bolt side cover. I have rebuilt many of either trans, & thaey arent that bad if you are a patient builder the 1st time or 2. best bet is a good old Chiltons on the breakdown. Best of fun,crazyAL

Thanks it did come apart in 2 pieces I was wondering what was wrong every time I looked at a saginaw manual and it didn't match.

Longhorn is right, if it has 4 bolt side cover it's a Muncie non synchro 1st.

I've had them apart before. The main issue with them is that they can rip the 3rd gear synchro hub out. It's held in by a snap ring that pops out of it's groove. On my current 63 truck, I just cleaned up the snap ring groove with a Dremel and put it back in place. It works fine.

They are dead simple inside and a great first transmission rebuild to learn on.

I just bought another one at the swap meet last week to rebuild and swap into my truck.

I got all of the parts to rebuild it (bearings and seals, etc..) at my local transmission shop for 70 dollars.

I will rebuild it in a week or so and take pictures of everything along the way and do a tech post on the process.

Hey Tx do you happen to have some kind of manual or exploded view of this tranny. Your picture is the exact tranny I have. When I disassembled mine there were needle bearings all over the place. Do I need some kind of press to get the main shaft out of the tail shaft housing?

I have one of those 30 dollar ebay service manual CDs for my 63 truck. It has a whole chapter on rebuilding the transmission. Good pics in there.

I don't know about taking the shaft out of the tailhousing yet. I just pulled it as a unit and slide the mainshaft/ tailhousing out so I could access the synchro part of it.

I have a big powdercoating job to finish this week, but should be able to do the rebuild and tech article next week if all goes as planned.

Tell them you have an early 60s light duty 3 speed. I got all the rebuild parts from them for 70 dollars. They keep it in stock.

To remove the mainshaft from the rear housing there is a snap ring inside that you have to expand into a groove & tap the bearing out. The manual will explain it.

How do I get the snap ring out? What manual? I don't have one, I'm looking for one though. Do you have one you can send me or a pdf version? Possibly know where I can get one?

The snap ring stays in the groove. You expand it enough to allow the brg. to come out. I believe Classic Parts carries reproduction service manuals or you might find an old shop that has a Motor's or Chilton's manuals. I don't have a scanner hooked to my computer or I would copy one. I could print it & send it by USPO.

Ok guys I got the main shaft out of the tail housing now I need to remove the cluster gear assembly and counter shaft assembly. Can someone tell me how to do that?
