I need help w/ Edelbrock 1405 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My '76 GMC K15 came with an Edelbrock 1405 Performer Series carb when I
bought it. I am in the process of rebuilding it and would like to put an electric
choke on it. ( It currently has the manual set-up ) My problem is those chokes
are really expensive! Is it possible to use one off a junkyard 1405 or maybe
one from another make carb.? I guess I'm cheap cause 50-80 bucks seems
off the hook to me. Any suggestions?

From what I have seen, all the square bore Edelbrocks use the same electric choke. 1405 and 1406, both of which I have, have the mounts for the electric setup on them.

Personally, I hate the electric choke. Never worked right for me.

X2, I run and very much prefer manual chokes on all my carbs.

The trick with the electric chokes is to get them adjusted right. Over the years, I have managed to get mine to the point that they work just fine. The one on my Son's truck was the worst and it took some playing to make it work. You can put a choke on that carb from a used carb---but it would work best if it was the same design carb as what you are working on.

That being stated, the Edelbrock 1405, 1406, 1407, 1411 carbs are the same body parts----ALSO the AFB carbs that Carter Carbs sells is the SAME EXACT unit, just different retailer's name. The Edelbrock and Carter AFB carbs are ALL made by a company called Magnetti-Marelli USA and sold under the AFB name. The parts are interchangeable and the part numbers are even close to each other. I have a Carter in my storage that is full of Edelbrock parts, because Edelbrock sold them cheaper than Carter did.

The kit is $48.75 at summit. #1478. Someone's banking at 80 buck$. And they're easy to install.
