School me on drivetrain

Ok guys, Im new to chevrolet and I have a few questions. So I have a '68 c10 pickup that has a 292 and a 3 speed converted to floor shift. I was wondering if I could mate a smallblock with that transmission without problems. Also, would the flywheel from my 292 work on a smallblock? How about engine mounts and that stuff. Im also wondering which 4 speed I should look for. A buddy of mine has a '64 chevy schoolbus with a 4 speed and 2 speed rearend. He told me to look for the big burly 4 speed out of something like that. I want something that can take some abuse, and get decent mileage. I might have access to a 267cui smallblock and I might try to put that in(for the fact of just having a V8 and the cool sound, I know it wont be a hotrod). Im trying to do this as cheap as I can. Thanks guys.

Chris

Re: School me on drivetrain

If the 292 is in good shape, I would not mess with replacing it with a 267 SB.....the 292 will run that itty bitty SB flat into the dirt If you want cool, go 3/3 split on the header on that big inline, dual exhauast, & add an Offenhauser 4 brl intake with a 390 cfm Holley 4 brl on top! As far as the sb swap, it will bolt to your bell, the 292 flywheel wont work, & you will need to replace eng mount stands on the frame. the SB will mount in on the I6 250 stands, but sits a little (3 1/2") closer to the firewall. If you go V8, IMO, unless you are 327 or bigger.....you wont see an improvement over that ol 292. best of fun, crazyAL

Oh oh oh, that sounds cool! Where does one find the split header/exhaust? Or is that going to be my project when I learn how to weld?

My buddy that's helping me rebuild my c10 panel is working on a '70 Datsun 240z with the L6 that came from the factory with a split header and dual 2bbl carbs. It looks awesome but man it's complicated!

Try Summit racing, or Jegs on the header & the Offy intake & carb. You might also check out Clifford research...crazyAL

I'd find a 350 and be done with it. They're all over the place. You'd probably end up spending less than turning that I6 into a kraut rocket.

You can get some serious torque from an inline six. Clifford is a great source. here is a link to their home page.

http://www.cliffordperformance.net/index.html

Their slogan is 6=8, all they do relates to inline 6.

I like my L6 thank you very much

That and I'm too cheap to switch out to an 8. I loved my 4.0 L6 in my Jeep, truly bulletproof, and I love all the space. I literally crawled into my compartment to get to the carb the other night. Never could do that with my Jeep.
