Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

I have been doing my own powder coating, if it fits into a standard oven. Who else has been doing their own and what kinda equipment you using?
particulars on the gun... i am using the non impressive Harbor Freight gun,
but getting my powders from Ohio Custom Coatings.
my oven is a CL special..$30

my question is who has made their own larger cure oven, i really would like to bake larger items like bumper size, maybe even a block or heads.
throw up pics of your custom oven and maybe some specs of construction.
I am playing with making a larger, taller oven, 1X4 angle frame 3X3X7tall lined inside with 18-20Ga sheet fiberglass insulation 4 inches thick, and sheet the outside in 18-20Ga a large door(one side). on casters with a rack to roll in and out. use the guts from my existing oven but use both elements instead of just one for efficient heating.

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

Rooster, I have two large commercial oven elements in there. It pulls something like 40 amps at full load.

The insulation is rock wool insulation. It's basically fire proof and intended for oven usage. It came from a commercial distributing company that deals with contractors doing this kind of installation.

I get my power from powderbythepound mainly and some from Eastwood since they have the free shipping deal that costs 29 bucks a year. It's nice if I need a pound of something or the other I can just order it and not worry about shipping charges from 40 or 50 orders a year. I use them for my blacks and generic colors. PBTP has the good stuff though.

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

I use to do powder coating here in Montana, our over was 12' x 12' x 30' Long. Heated radiantly with used oil. We had an older German brand applicator can't remember the brand. We could powder coat just about anything. I got most of my powder from Tiger

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

talked to tiger and they can ship me the smaller amounts but PBTP has good prices for that along with Ohiocustomcoatings.com pricing too. Tiger does have a wharehouse like 8 miles from the shop....but take a while to use 44 or 50lbs box of powder.

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

i've got the basic Eastwood gun and love it. SO MUCH better than dealing with paints and solvents and all that crap. Just wish I could cure larger items...bigger than will fit in a standard oven.

I'll say this...Kevin (Tx Firefighter ) has done some parts for me and he did a great job. Wish I could set up a system but I don't have the time or space so I rely on guys like you. Interesting topic...

Stuff balls of wadded up aluminum foil into the bulk of it and mask the edges with tape.

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

I have an Eastwood gun and use an old oven (don't even remember where I got it)

I really don't like powder coating (the process). For me it takes WAY too long to prep stuff.

Check out pottery supply houses for kilns, insulation and elements if you are making your own kiln. We use seattle pottery supply, we do glass fusing and slumping at my work.

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

You guys using conventional ovens to make it heat faster you can rewire your elements so they both come on at the same time it will cut your time way down getting it up to temp

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

I have used a lot of powders and have found that columbia coatings have the best powder for the price IMO. You can buy as much as you want from small to larger amounts. There powder seems to flow the best and not a lot of orange pill. They also ship quick and fabulous customer service. I am using there pony gun, it is awesome!
Also here is a good link to a nice cabinet that I had found on the net.

Re: Powder Coating who's doing thier own?

ortegamotor, are those wheels aluminum? How did you prep the aluminum before coating? Did you blast them or scuff them to give the powder something to bit into?
