Carb Questions

I have a 71 w/ a 350 quadrajet and i am going to be changing the manifold and carb to edlebrock, and the carb is going to be an electric choke. are there any problems in making it an electric choke, my carb now is not a manual, but i saw on the new carb that it has 2 wires. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Carb Questions

No problems with an electric choke, just hook it up to 12 volts and go. The choke on Edelbrock carbs ground to the carb.

Re: Carb Questions

One wire needs to run to chassis ground (ie any part of the carb or intake should ground) and the other to a switched hot wire. There should be a spare terminal on your under dash fuse panel that is hot when the ignition is switched on. I would wire an in line fuse and run it to your carb. Another option would be if you've already changed from a points distributor to a HEI, the HEI will have a switched hot wire run to it. You could splice into that wire.

Re: Carb Questions

The only thing you have to watch for with that system is if you leave the key on without the engine running the choke will go off. The factory system uses an oil pressure switch. It,s no biggy but something to keep in mind.

Re: Carb Questions

A v-8 HEI from 75 up to early-mid 80's will work. Some in the 80's have computer controls. Make sure it has mechanical & vacuum advance. I always get a used one & fix it up, but a lot of guys are buying the new ones.

Re: Carb Questions

I would get a Skip White HEI off of E-bay. Plenty of guys on the Board running them.

Re: Carb Questions

Someone put a Holly manual doublepumper on mine, gas miles = 12 if I'm lucky.

Re: Carb Questions

Most cases a double pumper on a small block street rig is overkill...

I found out the hard way when it turned a 13.28 quarter mile. The only good thing I see is I don't have to choke it to crank it....I also noticed it has TRW, MSD, Lunati, Weiand, Flowmasters, B&M and other goodies, probably overkill as well but it sure feels good when it stalls to 2400 then leaves rubber half way down the track and everyone else is playing catch up with the LWB truck.

You're not missing anything. Plug the ones you don't need.

Re: Carb Questions

make sure you use locktight on the intake bolt threads or you will have oil and antifreeze coming out of them, I use the blue and it works well

Re: Carb Questions

ok i have everything ready to be put on, pulled everything off and I'm about to start the install after cleanup, as far as the fuel line goes, what am I suppose to do? the quad goes on the front and the edelbrock does not. i went and looked to see if there were different fuel lines that i might should have bought and didnt find anything, any suggestions.

Re: Carb Questions

Not necessary, but I'm running one of these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G1532/
I used a tubing cutter and cut the stock metal line and ran a short piece of rubber fuel line to the chrome piece. You could basically do the same with out the chrome line and run straight to the carb.

Re: Carb Questions

buy a length of metal tubing at an autoparts store and take the time and effort to bend it for a nice safe good looking fuel line//dont use lengths of rubber hose they burn things up in the long run
