Running rich? timing off?

Alright guys got a 84 c10 with a mid 70s model 400sbc in it... i need to get the carb tuned down a little bit it seems to be running rich there is puffs of unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust. i am new to the carburated trucks and cars being a young gun lol.... as the title says i have a holley 750 doublepumper. and was told the truck has a cam. there is a possibility it is off timing a little bit too but i cant for the life of me find a timing mark on the harmonic balancer.... any help with either of these topics would be much appreciated..

thanks
gavin

Re: Running rich? timing off?

Is the timing mark on the front of the timing chain cover BEHIND the waterpump? Take alook down the front from the top and see if the indicator is there. The early engine had the timing pointer at the side, but the mid 80s trucks had the indicator at the top.

As for the rotating timing mark---Is the balancer a stock unit? Then the marrk should be there unless it is covered up with paint.

Re: Running rich? timing off?

When do you get the black smoke out of the exhuast? Part throttle, wide open throttle (WOT)?
How are you looking for the timing marks, with the truck running, not running? It will only have 1 degree marks for the first 30 or so degrees then every 90 degrees. Make sure you look all the way around. Is the balancer painted? Do you have a timing light?
