Automatic steering column problem

I am doing body work on a 71 for a lady and yesterday, when I moved the truck out of the shop, the shift selector would not pull back and go back into park. All other gears work fine. So, I popped the pin out of the shift lever and saw a ball on the end of the lever that goes into a piece of flat metal with a hole in it inside the column.

Is that piece of metal supposed to slide down when the lever is pulled back? Should I spray some lube in there? I don't really want to make a big project out of this if I don't have to. Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Re: Automatic steering column problem

Spray a little WD-40 in there and work the lever back and forth. It will loosen up.

Thanks, it worked perfectly. I guess I should have tried that before I posted.
