Cross Over Steering Question

I have read alot of posts talking about cross over steering, and one common thing that I have found is the need for a 2wd steering gear box. Can anyone tell me why it is necessary for the 2wd steering box? The reason I ask is because I recently purchased an AGR Superbox 2 4wd model. From what I have read, there are supposed to be 4 ways to mount a pitman arm on the AGR box, but I haven't been able to get a solid answer on that. I'd prefer to not have to buy another steering box, as this one is awesome, and isn't cheap, and is practically brand new. Thank you for your help.

Re: Cross Over Steering Question

Factory chevy 4x4 boxes only have a piece of splined section on the sector shaft. Therfore the pitman arm cannot be "indexed" to move it to the position for crossover. Chevy 2wd boxes have spline all the way around the shaft with 4 different keyways, which WILL allow you to index the pitman arm. I dont know how your AGR box is set up, but if you find that you cannot index your steering arm, just swap out the sector shaft in the box for one from a 2wd Chevy. Its a very simple procedure, and with the right tools only should take 20 minutes or so. Good luck!

Re: Cross Over Steering Question

One more reason is that the 4wd moves front to back and the 2wd moves left to right.

Re: Cross Over Steering Question

I recently converted mine to crossover, and I wish I had done it when I built the truck!!! I only have a 4in. lift, but the difference was amazing! Unfortunatly the steering boxes are not the same in direction of travel as oats84 said. Find someone to sell that box to and go crossover when you can.

Re: Cross Over Steering Question

GUYS!! The box moves the same direction!! You are talking about the difference between push-pull steering(factory 4x4) and crossover steering(aftermarket 4x4). The boxes are completly identical except for the sector shaft, which changes out easily buy removing the steering arm and the 4 bolts at the top of the box that hold it and the aluminum box plate in.

Re: Cross Over Steering Question

thanks guys for your help. I called AGR and they said that changing out the shaft might not be as easy as removing the four bolts and pulling the shaft out, due to their box designs. he said it had to do with what generation of box it was when they built it?? that doesnt make alot of sense to me, however it would cost less than $100 for them to swap out the shaft.
