Re: Should I stick with stock carb or aftermarket?
well as my dad has said to me ever since i have had enything that was modifyable (is that a word?) "STOCK IS BEST"... and i learned it the hard way. but you also have to think chevy paid engineers lots of money to make a good truck from the factory so as i said "STOCK IS BEST". Get ya a good rebuilt q-jet and make sure it is adjusted right with a good tune up and it will be perty good on gas if ya can keep the 4bbl shut up.
and also the only thing a open element air cleaner dose is make ya sound like ya got more motor than you realy do, and your choke will nnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeevvvvvverrrr cut off which burns more gas

Re: Should I stick with stock carb or aftermarket?
Stock cars are easier to repair than modified ones. On a stock vehicle when you go to the parts store, it's easy to get stock parts. But remember, 750 Holleys were "stock" on plenty of 60's cars. So were open element air cleaners. The air cleaner has nothing to do with the choke coming off either that is either a hot air, exhaust crossover, or electric function. The one advantage to a snorkel type air cleaner is the pre-heater that helps keep the engine from running too lean in cold air environments. The big problem with swapping carbs, cams, exhausts, ignitions, etc. is that most end users don't put sufficient time in tuning and adjusting.
