speedometer help

So my speedometer was jumping and making a ticking/grinding noise after about ten miles of driving. It did this with the speedometer connected to the cable and when it was disconnected also. i pulled the cable and lubed it and it still did the same thing... so i bought a new cable and put it in today. now my speedometer doesn't work at all. when i hook a drill up the the cable the speedometer works and does't jump at all. Am I missing something??? is there a trick? The cable feels like its in the groves when i put it in the transfer case...
