Took my truck on first long trip
Well I sold my explorer last week (my Daily driver), and have been on the hunt for an 00+ yukon or tahoe. Well I found one for cheap that was in west sac (90 miles from my house, but only 15 miles from UC davis where I'm a student). I didn't have anyone to go with me so I could buy it and drive it back, so I figured I'd take my truck and a 16' car trailer. I planned on buying it when I got done at school and put my truck on the trailer and pull it home (tahoe get better mpg and has better brakes). well I went to look at it and they "forgot" to mention that it had a bad brake pedal wobble, cel was on, and that you could put the pedal to the floor and it would take a block to get going 25 MPH! Damn craigslist! They were asking $5300 it had a salvage, but looked really nice with 22's and new paint, I told them with the problems the most I'd pay was $4000, they said they would take $4500 so I said forget it. Anyways my truck ran great, but I really need to ditch the 4.56's! Towing the trailer I could pass anything on the onramp.....until I got to about 70 and reading 4K on the tach! I have a few issues to work out but was happy with how it ran.
The best part was after I looked at the hoe I had to go back and take a quick test. well since I was gonna only be in class for like 20 minutes I decided to park in the 6 story garage. With my flowmaster 40's dumped right after the muffler it rumbled in the garage and set off car alarms on the next level up. I got some strange looks when I parked at the meters and took up five spaces, it cost me $5 for 40 minutes but was worth it. When I came back to the truck there was a meter maid circling and a Davis PD circling the garage, they must have been wanting to write five tickets if the meters expired It was great to drive a 40+ year old truck in the tree hugging, prius driving town where most of the students drive brand new hondas and toyotas that their mommy and daddy bought them (I'm 10 years older than most of the students and pay my own way). Sorry for the long post, but I had fun and thought I'd share. Heres a pic of 'big red' in the garage and here is a pic that I took when checking fluids before the trip, most people say they have never seen a rear diff tag still on there truck. Mine has 2 on the dana 60 rear one says, "41-9 4.56" (hard to make out but its in the pic) and the other said, "limited slip diff lube only" I guess it's a posi! (that's what my grandad told me but I never checked).

Re: Took my truck on first long trip
Forgot to mention that I ended up finding another tahoe yesterday and bought it. one owner, real clean, every option (sunroof sold me), and 116k miles for $7700. I'm loving the 'hoe and can't wait to throw a muffler and some 22's on it!

Re: Took my truck on first long trip
Here is the only picture that I've taken of the 'hoe so far. I've been busy, but I took this pic today with my cell phone after parking. It's not the greatest I know but I'll get some better ones when the weather clears up. This is in the same garage as the first pic my truck with the trailer, but this is on the roof (6th floor). I've had it for a week now and I see why the 5.3 is such a common swap into the 67-72 trucks. It has plenty of power and sounds great now that I put a magnaflow on it. I pulled a 6000 pound trailer yesterday and it pulled great (I was gonna pull it with my truck but the rental guy wouldn't let me cause the trailer harness isn't hooked up).

Re: Took my truck on first long trip
Forgot to mention that my hoe is an 01 4wd, has 117000 miles, every option including sunroof, and you can't tell by the picture but is a dark hunter green. I had a 18" case magnaflow put on it with 3 1/2" tip to finish it up.

I'm gonna wait a little while, because I might do a cam swap later then I can have some fun with it!
