If you want to know your gear ratio on a 10 bolt 8.5 which you have. Take the cover off and turn the ring gear until you see a set of numbers stamped on the edge of the gear this is the tooth counts for the ring and pinion. You divide those numbers and it will give you your gear ratio. For example if the numbers are 48:14 you divived 48 by 14 and it will give you 3.428 which is 3.43 gears.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?

Or an even easier way to check gear ratio is to hold one axle shaft solid, spin the other axle shaft and count how many times the pinion rotates. 3.5 is 3.43's, 3.75 is 3.73's. This trick usually works well, especially if you don't want to open the axle up. If the axle has a locker then you don't have to hold one axle shaft solid.

That is guessing a gear ratio, not knowing the exact gear ratio. I do this sometimes as a guessamate, but I always take the cover off, when its home, I may be nuts but I want to know exactly what I have. They also have a tag on them (if not removed) that tells you the gear rato and if its posi thats usually on the top bolt of the cover. I don't trust that either I buy parts from people and some people switch tags and stuff.lol Its only few bolts and some stinky gear oil to take the cover off and know exaclty what you have.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?

Does anyone know what rear end gear came in a 1983 S15? It had 2.8L V6 I believe.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?

I have an S-10 Blazer rear in my truck. The S-10's came with 3 or 4 gear ratios and the optional factory locker. Only way besides counting teeth like Kabwe said, was to look at the build options on the glovebox of the truck. Mine was the GU6 (3:42's followed by G80 which is Posi) thats what I needed. As far as rearends that can take abuse the 9" design is king if you're making 900+ horsepower, anything less and I'd stick with the Chevy stuff. 10 and 12 bolts take 30 LESS horsepower to turn than the 9" (pinion angle on the ring and an extra pinion bearing) so if you have a mild motor, use the Chevy stuff and enjoy the extra HP and mileage! 12 bolts can be set up to be really tough and I know of a guy who ran 9's with a 10 bolt!

I just did this. I got almost 2 revs (about 1.95)! What's up with that? Do I multiply X2? This appears to be the original rear end ('55 stepside).

Thanks,

Thanks,
Multiply by 2. 2 x 1.95 = 3.90

I believe 3.90 was the standard ratio in the stock half-ton rear in '55.

You must have a calibrated eye to see 1.95 revolutions. I'd have trouble unless I measured things getting that accurate.

I'm one of those engineering types. (It's a sickness.) I put the ol' chalk marks down on both the yoke and the brake drum, then spun the dial. Could tell it was just under 2 revs.
