Post Grille Question

Has anyone clear coated an aluminum grille?? I spent most of yesterday making mine look like new & wondered if I can protect it (without paying for new annodizing). Will the clearcoat stick, or will I be scrubbing off the flakes in a couple of years?

Question

I've been wondering about that myself. How did you polish your grill?

Well . . . first I knocked out all the dents & dings from the back side, then sanded all the hammer marks. Next I removed the annodizing with 220 grit paper, cleaned up the scratches with 320 grit and after it was clean & smooth I used 600 grit for a nice gloss and then went to 1500 for a bright sheen. I finished it off with 0000 steel wool.

It took a lot of time, but the grille looks new & didn't cost me $600 Lee

While not being able to answer 100% sure of myself, seems that OEM alluminum wheels seem to loose there clear coat after about 5 to 8 years...try it on a smaller piece of trim given the same treatment and see how well it sticks.
