Post Projects

Whats a good foundation for a good project? Everybody ask about the rocker panels. Is it that costly to fix? How about the floorboards? Whats the worst case scenario for these trucks? Whats the limit to the rust?

Re: Projects

There are a lot of factors to look at when looking to buy a truck and what is a good foundation and whats not. A lot of it depends on what you can do yourself and what you want in the end and how much money you want to invest. It depends on what you are planning to use it for and why you want a "project". MANY will tell you that you will rarely get the time/money out of truck what you have put into it. Pretty common in this hobby. Some guys do it for a living, but thats a whole other animal.

If a guy can weld and do body work and paint and wants a "daily driver", you could probably get something that is not pristine but has normal rust and make yourself a nice truck for not a ton of money upfront and moderate investment as you go. You could look at body panels (there are many vendors out there) and price them out to give you an idea. If you want something that is more pristine and little or no rust, you will pay a premium. That premium will depend on the model you are looking for and what part of the country you live in. And what kind of luck you have! If you have to pay someone to fix rust and panels you will quickly have a lot of money into an old chevy pickup. As far as a limit goes, that is kind of personal. You will see extremes...some guys fix stuff that is so rusty most people would never even consider fixing it. Some people are amazing fabricators. I would say a good limit would be if you can buy a replacement panel for the rusted out section its okay for some, if there isn't anything available you are entering a whole different level...pure fabrication.

Spend a little time in the builds section. It showcases a wide variety of projects, from hi-end to backyard daily drivers. Its a great place for inspiration as well as amazement. You need to decide on what you really want and what you are capable of and go from there. Become familiar with these trucks by cruising around this site, ask a lot of questions, and go for it! You will find something out there that fits...there were lots of these trucks made!
