HELP with appraisal before 5 pm pacific - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I went to look at a 1972 GMC camper special today. The guy wants $3000.00 for the truck. I was wondering if this price was too high. Here's what I found, that was wrong.

The truck is rough as far as the paint goes, needs lots of work.

The cab is from a 2wd chevy with a 2" body lift. and a whole cut for the 4x4 shifter. It is a A/C cab.

The transmission dose not work. <auto>

It has a 350 small block, 205 t-case.

There were a number of other things wrong with this truck, no parking brake, wireing harness to rear lights is jacked, outer A/C box is gone, the interior is decent, seat is tore ect.

I was just wondering what you guys thought. I am going to offer him like $1000.00. but even then I still feel it is too much, what do you think? Landon

EDIT : all most for got it has all the normal rust, in the normal areas, but it is not all that bad.

I would give him close to $3000, if I could drive it away but like I said the tranny is broke. OH wait I can drive it home in reverse.

My wife said I probally should not buy it but, another truck, is another truck.

The truck looks to peiced togeather, via someone who dose not know much about them.

I would say 1000 seems far. If someone wants to sell a turd then they better make sure they sell it to a blind person.

There was a 70 K20 for sale next to my office for $4500. The guy drove it everyday, had 33" tires, 4" lift, the engine and tranny were very functional and the body was in excellent condition. For $3000, I would expect either a fully funtinoal truck with some minor rust/body issues or some mechanical issues with a near perfect body. With the tranny dead, you can't even test drive it to see what other problems it may have, like ball joints, u-joints, steering, etc. At $1000, it might be worth it.

i wouldn't pay anywhere near $3000 for it. i paid $1000 for my 69 GMC, but it was driveable. if it's going to be a parts truck, then offer what you think it's worth. if it is going to be a driver, then i'd steer clear of it. just my opinion

thanks bouncytruck, I also agree with you. I have a new tranny at home that came out of my 72 that I am restoring, but to put it in and find out something else is dead would piss me off. especially at $3000.

Sorry your description just made me think that the guy thinks his crap is made of gold or something. Save your money and buy somthing else that is worth it. Forget that guy, you don't want to buy his "Project" that he can't finish. You will find a much better deal if you just keep your eyes open.

I know Cleatussnow bought a really nice 69 4x4 for $4500/$5000 or somehting along those lines in California. So deal are made to be had, just keep your eyes open.

Landon,

From the sound of it, as a restoration project it would be expensive to fix all of his mistakes.

From a daily driver perspective, you just hope that he didn't cobble something up like he cobbled up the cab.

Also, are you sure that your 2wd transmission will mate up the transfer case?

I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy it -- I'm just saying that I'd take these factors into account with the offer. By the same token, he's unlikely to take $1K if he's asking $3k.

I certainly would take the advice of the others here and not spend much more than $1k on it.

bpmcgee, I have a 4x4 tranny. I am not planing to spend anymore than $1000.00 for the truck. I looked at the truck very close and I could list off a lot of factors why I would not pay $3000.00 for it.

I was only wanting help to see if I was wrong in offering him $1000.00.

3K is too much for sure. I've see trucks in the Truck Trader all the time for half that much that you could drive away.

Thanks, for posting the pic, I only paid 4000 for the truck and it had a 6" lift and a bad arse, 454 that eats mustangs, so 3k is very high, I would only give him about 750-1000 if he does not take it walk, I have found a couple of nice trucks in this area just by driving and scouting.

Sounds like a good decision, Landon. Too bad you aren't closer, I know of a '68 that could pay for itself in rust-free sheet metal when you're done driving it.

You'll find something better than that. They pop up quite often around here. Usually in the $3000-$5000 range for something decent. Good luck and let us know if you find something else.

There are deals out there.

I paid $1500 for my suburban a few months back

Then there are people who think they can get a lot more then its worth. There is a guy next to my buddies new house that is asking $5000 for a 68 SWB with a 327. The thing needs a total restore. It could be used as a driver but it would need a bit of work.

Glad to see you saved your money and did waste it on someone elses junk. Althought it does suck that the truck wont have a good home.

mikep found a 1969 stepside daily driver with a I-6 and speed for $500. I passed on it but CARS4567 picked it up and drove it home! I could not get excited about another short stepside even at $500. THERE ARE LOTS OF GOOD DEALS OUT THERE! Don't get too excited about just another truck unless you really need the parts NOW! I am taking the minimalist approach to my rodstoration at this point so this is just my 0.02 rant...LOL!

Well I know it is a 4X4 but just to give you a hint I bought a 69 GMC Fleetside half ton and drove it home for 500.00 and it passed inspection. The body is solid metal but has some nice dents in it. Then just last weekend I bought a 72 GMC 1 ton dually for 450.00 The engine sounded like it was ready to throw a rod and the body is lookin rough, but I got a used 305 for 125.00 and dropped it in on sunday and then drove the thing 250 miles home down the PA turn pike All said and done to get the 72 and get it running it cost me 1200.00. Now I need to find a rear shackle, weld some floor pans in and it will make a great every day driver as long as I'm not going for fuel mileage.
