Anyone tried this Tire set-up??
Has anyone tried running a 33x10.5 tire on a 15x8 ralleye wheel on a 78 Scottsdale shortbox 4x4 with stock suspension and body height?? I picked up a truck with 15 year old skins (31x10.5s on 15x8 ralleyes), and I'm looking to upgrade to a larger diameter tire to fill up the wheel well a little better. Looking for info on rub points or potential mods that would allow for the 33's on the stock ride set up. Any info would be appreciated. TIA

More often then not they will rub on the rear of the front fenders. Just sometimes though. Like pulling into a gas station or something like that.

It will "fit" but a 32-11.5 will be a better choice if you actually use it off road. The rear of the front fender will chew a tire up pretty good.

The rear edge of the fender opening should be cut back, or like someone I know, bead it in with a maul and put self tappers in to hold it. The truck is a nice

Re: Anyone tried this Tire set-up??
Thanks for the info updates.
BigDnew - Do you have any pics of what the 33's look like on a 15x8? Are you running 10.50s, 11.50s, or 12.50s?? Fla wildman - Didn'tg have any tire cutting or rubbing troubles? Damien - I've seen trucks like you're describing many times, my goal is to get the 33s to fit at stock ride height so that any modifications won't be noticable to the untrained eye. How is Mankato these days? I used to live there, went to school there (MSU), and worked at the Chevy dealer for three years back in the early 90s. |

Re: Anyone tried this Tire set-up??
Yes I am. Class of 95'. Dr. J would remember me. I doubt Kirk Ready is still there. Al Wadke still running the machine shop? I worked on twin-turbocharging my 70' for my senior project. Got a 67 page paper out of it. Dr J had that paper for two years before he graded it... Yep I remember Schooner nite at the Tross, Boot night at the Caledonia lounge, and mug nite at TJs downtown...

Re: Anyone tried this Tire set-up??
Yep, All of those bars are closed. TJ's closed last year I think. No Kirk Ready, I've heard the name. Al is still in the EPL, and Jones has been chair for almost a year. So I guess you would be the original "Twin Turbo"? A guy put twins on a '95 Lightning 2 or 3 years ago so we called him Twin Turbo.

Re: Anyone tried this Tire set-up??
Fla Wildman & bigarmzz -
Those are some good lookin' trucks. That's the tire set up I'm lookin' for, the 31x10.50s on my truck now look dinky. Now I'm really looking forward to gettting some 33's. (can you say TAX CHECK!!). Thanks for the Pics!! Damien - WOW times must be tuff in southern Minnesota if all the bars are closing in a college town. I don't know if I was the first to put twin turbos on a sbc, but it was a fun project. I remember doing a WOT test on the dyno and snapping two piston skirts off, I blew the side tank off the radiator once. Those turbos sure did loosen that small block up. You could watch the video and see the pressure through the crankcase increasing as the test went on. By the time the test was done, it was blowing oil smoke like a old train engine. I did peg the 0-250 HP scale on the dyno the first power run I did though. |
