anyone running a s10 rear-end or close tuckin 10s in back?

i saw a ad for the new greg weld wheels and was thinkin id only have to buy the two front runner tires since i got 275-60's out back but they only come in small ford or chevy pattern. just curious to see what rears others have swapped in to run fat tires on 10s in back. pics be nice too.

I wouldn't put a s10 rear in my 1/2 ton truck, I really don't want one in my s10. The 7.5/7.625 rear is not know to be very strong. To run the 5x4.75 pattern wheels, your best bet would be have your stock axles re-drilled. You could run an adapter too, but if your racing, you don't want that.

well im not racing, just want a nice clean look....for cheap, like everybody else (i think). was asking because i can get one of those rears for free and i was trying to figure the easiest way to get a new look and better gas mileage. i got a 4.10 gear now, and really want it lower than it is, but tryin to find a 32-33" tire for the back that isnt for mudding is hard. adapters im worried about clearance in the back becuase i want to run the 15x10 in back and still tuck a tall tire, but like i said there harder to fin, so was looking to swap somethng that would clear the 10 on a 295/50 maybe if i was gonna have to change the rear regarless. dont really want a ford rear in it, unless theres something that could gain me discs that clear the 15s still.

not a off road truck, just my daily right now. but as it rides now, i have to do somethin fast so i can go long distances on the highway, so imma have to swap to another rear soon. just getting some ideas before i start buying stuff that wont work. cheapest alternative might be adapters and newer 6-lug takeoffs to get a taller tire for cheaper, so i can keep the rear.but right now, i cant go to the pickapart cus it would cost like 20 bucks to get there. why did my truck have to come with 4.10s when i wanted to lower it, but 22s are out of my price range and slamming your truck on 285-65-16s dont look too cool either so im just trying to figure somethin to do i can afford and pull off rather quick right now.

find a nice narrowed dana 60 or ford 9 inch, not narrowed alot so you can have that clean look, or find one of an old drag car and just tub it

A Ford 8.8 rear out of an Explorer is plentiful in the junk yards and they are about as strong as a 12 bolt. They are almost as narrow as an S10 rear. This is about as cheap as it gets for a strong and narrow rear. You can run Ford/Dodge car wheels for the time being, or have the axles redrilled for whatever lug spacing you want.

There's also the 8.5 10 bolt out of an S10 that's pretty strong and will have the 5x4.75 car pattern, but the problem is that it's rare. I've seen some S10 guys running a Ford 8.8 under their trucks for this reason.

You will have to take measurements and see if one of these will work for you, just a few suggestions.

Oh yeah and if you are concerned with highway RPM's for the time being, a 2.73 or 3.08 73-87 truck rear is cheap and plentiful at the junkyards. Suburban rear ends will work too. No one wants these ratios. Pop the cover to make sure you get one that has life left in it and run it.

cool, ill keep an eye out then, and also get some measurements. those wheels are 300 a set new, and i think with the 73 front back on itll look killer with skinnys in front and wide 10s in the back. thanks for the info.

The explorer 8.8 will also give you rear disc.

Not all of them have rear disc. I was looking at one this weekend that had rear drum brakes. Don't know if it was an option or a model year change item.

The Cadillac Seville and Fleetwood from 77 to 79 have 11" rear disc and 5 on 4-3/4 that will clear 15" rally wheels. The Oldsmobile Tornado has 10.5" rear disc and 5 on 4-3/4 too. Both require widening two of the four mounting holes on the caliper mount bracket so it will bolt to a typical GM rear axle. The Seville rotors will fit over unmodified stock rear axle flanges. The Tornado rotors require you to turn the axle flange outer diameter down a little on a lathe to make them fit.

The 89-up 7-5/8" 10-bolt got the larger spline axle that is the same as the 8-1/2" 10-bolt in the 1/2-ton square body trucks. You can snag the axles out of the S-10 and narrow a more common square body housing to match the width. The 2wd S-10 has a very short axle and the typical S-10 4x4 a little wider.

I have seen the axle tubes pulled out of the center section, shortened and reinstalled into the center section in under an hour but I would leave that up to a professional shop to do.

yeah i had one of the 2.73 ones but didnt think i was gonna ever use it so i threw it away like a dumbass. i could run 295-50's and still get good mileage with it. just find another would probly be easiest like you said,, just i am concerned with being able to tuck 10s in back. that the only reason to go to a narrower rear.
