87 chevy
Am looking at a truck to buy and would like some insight on what to look for about it, my 1st time buying a truck, the guy says it has 93k miles and thinks their original. Anyway i can tell? Since they deleted my last post cuz it had a link cant post it here. so heres some info on it "1987 Chevy Silverado V20 (3/4 ton) 4x4 pick up with an 8ft bed that I've owned for 5 years. The truck is equipped with a factory TBI 350 motor, 4spd tranny, 12 bolt rears, power steering, door locks and windows and factory AC that needs to be charged. I installed a Rough Country 6" lift with 36x16.5x16.5 Dick Cepek tires on Alcoa rims about a year and a half ago. Overall the truck is in really nice shape for the age. It has approximately 93,000 on the speedometer believed to be original. I've also installed/replaced radiator, cooling hoses, starter, belts, two new gas tanks with straps and one new sending unit, new ball joints, flow master dual exhaust etc I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Truck runs and drives good. It does have the typical rust spots in the rockers and cab corners. " thats the info on it whats should i look at to see if its a good deal. Anything specifically to look at to tell if its original 93k miles? i kno is hard since its an 87 but figure id ask yall experts. thank you
*Note im not asking for price just what to look at* Although ive seen postings of CL from ppl who dont support but ohwell. |

Re: 87 chevy
I would go take a look at it. Test drive it. See if everthing works with the 4 wheel drive. Look at it like you would a normal truck. Just take into consideration that it is a 23 year old truck. Rust is normal on these trucks. Also I've never heard of a V20 but I'm just being anal. He prolly meant to say C20.
Also when your driving make sure that the Odometer is working. I bought my truck with 91,000 miles and when I drove it home after the purchase I relized that it wasn't working. So it of course has more miles.

Looking at your original post it was edited because it appeared that you were wanting to sell your truck. There is no problem with you asking the value of a truck that you are looking to buy. Sorry for the confusion. Now lets see if we can't offer some assistance. It's hard to verify that the mileage is correct, but you can look for clues. How do the corners of the pedal pads look? If they have excessive wear the mileage might be wrong. Also look at the over all condition. If it's in pretty solid condition then it's probably right. What really matters is how it's been cared for. If a thorough inspection revels rigged up repairs, then mileage doesn't matter much. If it looks to be well maintained then you go with your gut. One thing to look for is cracks in the frame around the steering box. This is common on a 4wd. It can be fixed, just be aware if it needs it. I tried to look at your C/L link but the ad was inactive. Post some pics and we might be able to offer more assistance.

Re: 87 chevy
That's the designation they went to in 87. With the new 88-98 trucks coming out using the C/K designation GM needed a different designation to distinguish between old and new body style.

Re: 87 chevy

"V" series just meant 4wd simply put that is, before that it was "C" and "K" series

Re: 87 chevy
I'd think it would go for about $3500 to $5000 sight unseen. I've got a friend that buys and sell square body 4x4's here and about the most unless fully restored he can get is that. I never go by the odometer on mileage, they are to easy to tamper with. AC needs charge, or A whole new system? Anytime AC doesn't work they tell you "it needs charged". We've all heard that line before only to have to replace everything to get it to work.

Re: 87 chevy
That looks like a nice truck, but I don't think I'd consider paying more than $3500.

Re: 87 chevy
Damn they both look like pretty nice truck for sure. I would make sure to check for any rigging in repairs. Check under the doors n between the bed n cab for rust. Since its lifted I would drive it try the 4wheel out thoroughly and check make sure the lift was installed decently no hack job. Hard to tell with miles be sure to see if the odometer actually works. I agree I would say offer the first guy lower cause it seems lil steep the second ones not to bad might try n offer him cash lower then that and go from there. Good luck buddy

Re: 87 chevy
Well i checked out the 1st 1 today. Guy asking to much for it. He wont go under 4500. back bumper is rusting out and crooked but seems its just the bracket thats bent and not the frame. right side of bed has a bunch of surface rust all over it from top going to bottom, not a problem but should definitely affect price. needs rockers and cab corners but few trucks dont up here. front right fender is rusted through round the chrome trim and from of it aswell as inner fender has some big rust holes in it. Hood is fiberglass and paint already faded. front left directional dont sit in the fender correctly. The crome trim on the drivers side door is coming off and he duck taped the end to the door LoL.
Drivetrain wise its good. Starts up without a problem and was cold. purrs nice runs good not rough. Goes through gears nicely. Just the throttle pedal feels very hard i gotta push harder than i think i should, cant just use my foot need to use my leg if u get what im saying was pretty awkward to drive. volt gauge didn't work, fuel gauge dont read correct, with both tanks full it would read half a tank. radio comes and goes either sounds fine or just static. a/c was charged 2 seasons ago and dont blow cold so theirs a leak. tire tread was probably 70% gone. Nothing to bad that cant be fixed but aint worth 4500. Its looking at needing new front fenders and inners. rockers and cab corners both sides. all surface rust on top of bed sides and right side fender cleaned up. then redo gauge wiring and probable new fuel senders. a fresh paint job re-apply chrome and some new tires. i like wide tires so that be quiet abit and yet he still wants 4500 he crazy, i feel 3500 be bout max. Wish he would come down in price cuz it dont got many miles on it original 93k has papers to show it. |
