question.... how much patina is too much ?

ive got a 68 suburban that has alot of surface rust (patina) on it but when is it too much ?
i want to leave the outside the way it is..i like the look with the 15x10 slots and it being lowered but what about the interior ?

ive got some on the dash an doors and am wondering if i should just leave it and put newer stuff around it (door panels, handels etc) or sand it down and repaint the whole inside and make it very comfy inside.

what are people doing or what are ur thoughts ?

any help guys before i start ordering parts......

If it's not cozy to drive, you probably won't drive it, let alone keep it.

Do what you want, I have to like to drive it.

If your going to keep the patina on the outside, I think the inside should match. Just redo the dash pad, cluster, door panels/handles, seats and leave the patina.

I prefer the current trend to update the interior, but leave the outside. A good example of that is what n2billet is doing with his latest project Hazel. The inside will be like new, but the outside will be all original.

If you want to remove some of the rust but preserve the patina, then wash it down with CLR

Before CLR-

After CLR-

Re: question.... how much patina is too much ?

I saw that car at the good guys show in Denton. He used clr toilet bowl cleaner to remove the rust and cleared over it. It does look very good in person.

There is a thread on DFW stangs about it.

Re: question.... how much patina is too much ?

Can someone explain to this old guy what the fascination with cruddy looking cars in and why they are "cool"? as I just don't get it. Maybe because I have driven cars and trucks with worn out paint or primer most of my life due to not having the cash to fix them right most of the time and it just isn't cool to me to ride around in one even though my daily driver 71 GMC looks pretty rough.

This isn't cool or by design. It's worn out paint that I haven't had the time or money to do anything about.

I think "Patina" is the new term for "I'm too lazy to fix my truck right".

Re: question.... how much patina is too much ?

To each his own. Some people are painting old cars to make them look that way.

Who knows maybe someday a 1" diameter sidepipe might be the hip thing!!!

Yep ... CLR can be used as a toilet bowl cleaner.

Re: question.... how much patina is too much ?

I never tried it on rust but my sister in law used it on her car that had sat in sprinkler spray with well water. It had some pretty bad water spots from the calcium. She had tried a bunch of stuff with no luck, I told her to try clr. It said on the bottle not to use on cars so I told her to dilute it. she tried it and it worked great.

Those of you who have used CLR ,how much did you use per gallon of water ? I may have to try it and see how it works .

Re: question.... how much patina is too much ?

I need more details on this CLR method of washing. How much do you dilute? Are there any more pictures where someone has done this? I'm not going for the patina look, but it will be a few years before I am ready to have the truck painted, and I want it to look ok for a driver in the meantime, and not rust away. Right now I just have a little surface rust on a few panels.

I heard the same thing from an old timer at the local guitar shop about 50s and 60s fender strats...

"They sound like a 50 year old guitar. Like crap. I cant understand why someone would want to pay that kind of money to be cool playing a guitar that sounds horrible. The bad sound is the reason people pawned the damn things."

I love it, except for the shine.....Clearing to try to preserve it is fine, but IMO it needs to be flat.
