88 GMC shift question

Hey I am a transplant from the 60-66 board. I just purchased an 88 1/2 5.7 auto and it doesnt want to shift right. I read several other post about trannys and tried to do some trouble shooting. I checked the fluid levels and replaced the tps, but not getting the results I want. First gear will not shift until I reach 25mph, and second gear shifts at about 40mph. The shifts are not jackhammer, actually quite smooth, and it shifts down just fine. Once I get up to speed on the highway it runs great in third and fourth, but from a stop it always 25 and 40. The guy I bought it from said it had been rebuild and a shift kit installed, and it looks new so...? Anybody got any suggestions?

Those are high shift points for sure. The TV cable has to be adjusted right or the trans won't live for long. If the cable is pulled too tight it will cause it to shift late. You can have a tranny shop set it for you or refer to a service manual to learn how to set it yourself. It's not hard to do but I have no pics to show you.

Yep. checking the TV cable adjustment would be the first thing I'd check. It real easy. Just want to make sure its right. If adjusting doesn't fix it it can be something inside and a tranny shop may want to check it out. No, not that kind of tranny shop. A transmission shop.

Here this can get you started.

Re: 88 GMC shift question

Ok so I cant seem to find the (unlock lever) on the TV cable to adjust it. I pulled some shade tree mechanics on it and put a wire clamp between the end of the cable and where it connects to the throttle plate. Shifts WAY better, now I need to figure out a better fix for the adjustment. Thanks for all the help guys!

Re: 88 GMC shift question

Your truck should be the same as mine. The adjuster is a cube thing and the button to push is on the bottom. So ya got to push it up. Poor design but it is spring loaded. Should be able to just hold the button in, push the throttle wide open then release the button.

Well that is, if some hasn't monkeyed with it and got rid of the adjuster.
