Re: 6.2L Diesel Swap??

I think you need to think twice about the 6.2. The 6.5 WITH the turbo is much better. As a matter of fact, I don't think you can even get a 6.2 in a crate anymore. I really don't mean to be a smart-alec, but it will be a lot of work, and the 6.2 just is not a very good engine.

In any case, on here some where about a year ago, a guy put a cummins in his 68-72. OF COURSE, I cant find his posts now, but he did a really nice job. I am considering that conversion for mine.

cheers!

Re: 6.2L Diesel Swap??

well, i already bought one out of a CUCV military vehicle. i know the 6.5 is stronger, but not necessary looking for more power, just mpg and economics.... the mechanical injectors are way easier to deal with and I really like simple. With the 6.2 and 700r4 4x4, guys are getting between 25 to 30 mpg. Wish me luck though and thanks for you input.

Re: 6.2L Diesel Swap??

It has been done a couple times that I know of. Relatively easy swap as the 6.5/6.5 have similar physical properties to a big block. The mileage you are quoting sounds a fuzz high for a 4x4, but not far off for a 2x when driven kindly.

There is a pretty nice conversion occurring in this thread.

The 6.2Ls have their issues, but the military units got the injection pumps with the good guts in them, so that is a nice thing to have. The main web cracking issue is the reason my Suburban got a Cummins instead of a 6.2L with a Banks turbo.

My lone suggestion is to put the biggest radiator you can in it. Indirect injection diesels need plenty of cooling capacity.

Actually, the 6.2 and the 6.5 are the same engine and it`s not a lot of work at all.About the same as a big block swap or 6 to 8 cyl.The late 6.2s and the early 6.5 both share the same 589 block that just has the larger bore for the 6.5 (the only difference). And,the 6.2s tend to outlast the 6.5TDs.They get better mileage, too. You`ll run into clearance problems with the heater box with a turbo.I felt 275,000 miles was pretty good for me when I sold my`84 to a guy who ran it until the body rotted off, which is when he sold it to someone else to build another truck off of.The CUCV 6.2s and 1982 red blocks are the best of all. They have a higher nickle alloy content and are about bulletproof.
Cummins are awesome, not cheap, and a lot of work.I`ve known of many happy 6.2 converts and there are some on this site.

Re: 6.2L Diesel Swap??

I had a 6.2l 84 Suburban and it got 25-28mpg all day long. Cool swap idea. Now all you need is a Bio-Diesel processor and a bunch of veggie oil!!!!!
