Blinker/brake issue

95 Chevy 1/2 ton. Just started today after driving in the snow. When the brake is not on, the blinkers work fine. When I apply the brake, the blinkers freeze. When I apply the blinker after applying the brake, they blink once then freeze.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Blinker/brake issue

I've seen situations like this when the flasher goes out. I know you said it will blink, but before I started looking for zebras, I'd put a new flasher in it. Beyond that, it could be that a turn signal bulb socket has a corrosion issue. Also, the boards in the tail light housings are notorious for causing issues with signals and stop/tail lights.

Re: Blinker/brake issue

I did find some ice buildup on my trailer connector. Melted the ice, took the dremel to the insides, and stuffed some electrical grease in there, but it didn't help. It does work sometimes, just not all the time when the brake is applied. I'm thinking maybe the harness that connects to the factory wiring.

It's weird since it works flawlessly when not hitting the brake.

Re: Blinker/brake issue

Just to make a clarification, are you using the turn signals or the emergency flashers? What you describe is the proper operation if using the emergency flashers. They will flash until you press the brake pedal, then they will all light up. If this is not the situation, and they are doing this with the turn signal, here are some things I would try:

1. Check the circuit boards in the taillights, they are notorious for failing and causing all kinds of stupid issues. You can get both sides for $35ish at the parts store.
2. Unhook your trailer connector where it is spliced into the trucks wiring.
3. Remove the flasher and check the connections, replace if necessary

Turn signals. The hazards operate as they are supposed to. I'm going to go over all the wiring and the housings tomorrow so I'll let you know.

Re: Blinker/brake issue

Found a short in the trailer connector. Removed, and all appears to be working.

Thanks for the replies.
