Painting 1972 interior armrests

Has anyone ever painted their armrest pads? I am looking to do a grey type interior. would like to get it put back together after throwing on some quick paint.

Has anyone tried it? What did you use? Any pics? how are they holding up?

I use Plasti-Kote brand on all my interior parts. It has held up the best for me, and I think I have tried all plastic paints out there

I would go with SEM on the armrests. It is one of the most durable flexible coatings/dyes you can get and it would come in a rattle can if you wanted to just do armrests. The key is cleaning them properly and putting them out in the sun to be good and warm when you spray. I always get PPG PUI paint to do interior parts. I just like it because you can match a lot of interior areas like dash pad, visors, door panels and armrests if need be for about $40 for a 1/2 pint and $75 for a pint. It goes a long way if sprayed by a airbrush or touch up gun. I painted all the interior in my wrangler with it and none of it is peeling off. Trevor

picked some SEM up, we will see how they turn out

sprayed them last night, let them dry, picked them up this morning pressed on it and the paint shattered.... so much for this paint being the end all be all of paints for interior door panels and arm rests

quick question..... are using original armrests or the new reproduction urethane ones? Urethane parts don't accept dye or paint. Trevor

Another thing to always use before dying that I forgot to mention is to spray some Bulldog Adhesion promotor. That's what I have always used and never had a problem, but I have also never tried dying urethane parts. Trevor

Just make sure the prep work is done properly according to Sem's guidelines, and you will not have any problems. I have sprayed numerous interior and exterior pieces with the stuff and prep work is key.

ding ding ding!!! They are repops.. LOL the stock ones had nothing left of them.
I went ahead and sprayed them again and figured they will be good enough for now. i have really tossed a few different color combos for my truck but I am very leaning towards a surf blue exterior and interior grey or light silver....

so i did this till I get to the interior.. I have had no door handles and window cranks since Oct and wanted a door to operate properly. LOL

anyways Here is a pic of the results. I did find a couple of things after cleaning my door of some gunk. A shotgun shot a hole in the drivers door near the bottom obviously when someone was climbing out. which also was why the door panel on the drivers side was so scratched up and weathered... it was a repop. It is white on the back where the passenger one is blue all the way around.





The ultimate goal once I weld in replacement rockers and floor is to get the cab completed inside and then lay dynamat or something similar and do custom interior with power windows

I used the bull dog stuff on my repops and it helps allot with the adhesion of the paint....the passenger side is holding up well....drivers side is wearing off slowly but not flaking off.....no matter what you do you are going to have to freshen them up every once in a while to keep them nice....the corners are going to wear no matter what you do......

Well, painting any arm rest doesn't work very good because it is a high wear area. You will keep rubbing it off. Repops are eurthane and paint does not stick to that slick material!
You can now buy new grey arm rests and never have to paint them or wear them out.

I looked for grey armrests also and when they came I thought I had a winner but after 3200 miles of wear the grey paint is coming off a little. So the aftermarket supplier (LMC) part# 38-2538-GR $79.95 a pair just painted a set of black armrests and sold them as grey...........I'm not very happy.

Try classic industries since they are fairly close

You may want to Try Palco Industries they are in Reno. They make them to.They come in all colors but they paint them. Thats why the LMC ones are painted they buy them from Palco just like we do. Palco paints them

If you have a problem we can get the Dashes Direct ones

Just remember soft parts like vinyl get dyed plastic get painted
