Re: wich rear end??? please help!!!

I have the same setup going on my truck in the rear, and Nate's using a 67 six lug 12 bolt rearend (converted to five lug) and my rear wheels have a 5.5 Backspace. It will be posi also.

That rear end is 56.5" flange to flange.

Hope this helps.

Re: wich rear end??? please help!!!

is that measurement for a 68 rear end or a newer like the 72? i know the 68 is shorter but will cost over 300 for five lug axles. like most of us im trying to keep cost down. the camaro rear is 64 inches long so i guess its between the two older ones

Re: wich rear end??? please help!!!

FWIW, the 98 Camaro rear end is based on the GM 7.5 or 7 5/8" rear gear set. This is one of the weakest gear sets ever put into a Camaro. If you're going to run pretty wide rear tires with some decent grip and making decent HP, this rear end is risky. I know guys have drag raced them, but a lotta guys with stock motors have blown these Camaro rears up. They're plentiful and cheap, but way below the strength of a stock truck 12 bolt. Positraction is fairly common as are disk brakes, but these rears aren't long on strength.

I've got a 94 Camaro Z28 with that same rear end.

Re: wich rear end??? please help!!!

thanks for the reply. i got the rear end as part of the deal when i got my ls1 and 6l60e drivetrain. i want the posi and disk but im pretty sure its now between the other two rears. im leaning more toward the 71 5 lug i know it wider but just need to measure to see how much the difference is.

it will either be the 71 5lug with 71 5lug front or the 68 6 lug with 6 lug disk up front.

can the 6 lug be made posi??

Re: wich rear end??? please help!!!

I think it went from 56.5" to 58" somewhere between 1970 and 1971. I've heard of 1970 axels being 56.5 and 58.

You can get a way with the wider axel you will just have to run a different offset. I wanted a 10" rear wheel for my 285 tires to roll with out rubbing tucked so we needed the narrower rear.

I guess it all depends on your wheel and tire combo, but the narrower rear will give you the most options if you can swing it.

Re: wich rear end??? please help!!!

ok so its 3/4 of an inch to each side correct??

the shorter axles cost over 300 is it worth it for that 3/4 inch?? thats where im having problems deciding.

Re: which rear end??? please help!!!

The narrower axle is a plus if you want to run deeper wheels on the rear. What wheels are you planning on running?

Re: which rear end??? please help!!!

Don't forget you can have your six lug axels re drilled for less than 300 USD.

It was worth it to me.

I spent alot of money on all PB stuff and I wanted to have it right the first time. (For the wheel and tire set up I am going with)
