350 and 305 heads

I have a 78 stepper with a 305HO out of a camaro (30,000km on engine). I just bought a 79 350 out of a blazer to swap in. Im thinking of re ringing it and using the 305 heads for some compression and torque. Id be keeping a mild cam in it, like an rv cam. I would unshroud the valves a bit. I think it would make good torque. anyone else have something like this?

Re: 350 and 305 heads

A lot of people have done it with the same thought in mind, but it just doesn't work out that well. The 305 heads just don't flow well enough in stock form and it takes too much time/money to help them out. That money/effort would be better spent on better heads.
I'm sure that some will say that they have done it and it works fine for them....so it's up to you.

Of course, there are some 305 heads that are better than others, I would assume that the HOs would fit into that category? Do you have the casting numbers for the heads?

Re: 350 and 305 heads

I was told its an L69 engine, according to the internet, the heads would be 14014416. 416 heads are 1.84 1.5 valves and 165 cc intake runners. Looks to be ok. Im going to try them and if they suck ill get better ones.

Re: 350 and 305 heads

I have ran the 1.84 1.50 valve 601 casting 305 heads on a 350 before. I was happy with the gain in torque over the open chamber 993 heads. I pocket ported them and ran a 224 @ .050 cam.

I think the key with this swap is to not expect 5000+ rpm power. They are good for a solid gain in low end torque on a dish piston motor.
