Fuel tank relocation... one more time
I know this has been brought up at least 100 times with various answers but one more time with a different spin. I have a 72 GMC (soon to be short-bed) and I hate the tank in the cab. The easiest solution appears to be to move it to the back between the frame rails. I don't like that option since I loose the spare tire. Has anyone found a tank that will fit between the driver side frame rail and the drive shaft after routing the exhaust to the passenger side. This is how it is done on many late model GM & Chevy trucks. The gas tank in my Mazda B2300 (Ranger) works as far as length and width but is too deep.

I haven't seen that done, but I like the Idea. Just because nobody here has done it doesn't mean that it can't be done.

Re: Fuel tank relocation... one more time
Have you thought about having one custom built? I have no idea what it would cost, but I'm sure you could get one done to fit the space. Cnut

Re: Fuel tank relocation... one more time
That is probably where I will end up. I was just hoping to find someone else who had a cheaper idea. I've spent a lot of time on fuel cell and gas tank websites but just can't find anything that would fit. I have about 30-33 inches long by 12" wide by 10" high I will probably cave soon and have one made.
Thanks |

This link has dimensions of S-10 Gas Tanks
http://monsterautoparts.com/CHEVROLE..._gas_tanks.htm Looks like they are too long based on the 33" length you specified. Last edited by lakeroadster; 03-13-2010 at 10:24 AM. |

Re: Fuel tank relocation... one more time
Yes, too big. Looks like I will have to go the custom route. Any other ideas?

Re: Fuel tank relocation... one more time
I know this will sound gratitous but...buy a TIG Torch, learn to use it and make the F'n tank. In the long run, if you do very much of this "playing with trucks" it's a lot cheaper. When I started my truck I needed everything. The body was sound but Mickey Mouse and his brother, Goofy had been through it and there wasn't much of their work that was worth salvaging. Now I have a smoothed firewall, the tank is back behind the diff where it belongs, the exhaust is 2-1/2 inch seamless, polished stainless. The interior has a set of custom buckets mounted in the factory holes...yes, I built the seat mounts and the all steel center console. That welder has saved me about 30K in bodywork, exhaust, smoothing the dash, patching the floor and I don't know what else. I do know that there's not one drop of bondo on my truck and there are no holes in it that the factory didn't put there. It's all steel and where I needed a patch panel I welded it in, coaxed it into final shape with a hammer and dolly ground it flush.
Best of all, I work in an office all day. I'm not a mechanic, I'm not a welder and until I started on this truck I didn't know squat about sheet metal. But I learned. |

Re: Fuel tank relocation... one more time
that does sound like a slick idea, more of a factory type set-up, like you said, same as late-model GM trucks.
I'm subscribed to see if you find anything out, or just go custom! I'm still considering the blazer tank to go in the back frame, can't afford the alu. tanks, but depending on result of this thread, I may go that route!

Re: Fuel tank relocation... one more time
Here is maybe a solution to this for a great tank that is about the size that would fit in that spot.

definitely not a road trip tank right there at only 15gal.! But, less than half the price with the sending unit of most of these other alu. tanks out there that I've noticed...
