How would you make your truck unstealable?

My town has too many thieves taking vehicles for dangerous joy rides. So I want to make my truck unstealable.

The local public insurer uses these devices: MasterGard M6000 immobilizer;
Autowatch 573PPi immobilizer, but charges $280 for installation.

Read elsewhere of someone connecting their cigarette lighter to their solenoid so it wouldn't start with the lighter either in or out of the socket.

I like the cigarette lighter idea, but a thief might try to light up or put the thing back in the socket.

Any other suggestions?

pull the coil wire.... its short and fits in a pocket nicely. I do it in questionable areas.

Just looked up coil wire and it appears to be under the hood. The local thieves operate in most areas of town. I was thinking of something I could do in the cab at every stop. Either a physical part quickly and easily taken with me or something sneaky such as the lighter trick.

I guess I could pay the $280 for the very convenient method with the fob on the key chain. I was just a little surprised today when I heard the figure. I put one in a year ago and I think it cost about $160.

Do a search there have been a few threads about this. On my old truck I ran a toggle switch to the main power wire to the dizzy so the truck wouldn't start if the switch wasn't flipped. Cost me like 10 bucks for the all the stuff and like 20 mins to do it. Posted the 1st. thread I could find that talked about it hope that helps man.

I had searched for "immobilizer" but hadn't thought of other terms.

The horn going off when they try to take it is a nice idea too.

Someone may sells horn that plays a recording. Cool if the default recording were, "Quick, someone call the police. This is a burglar alarm. The kids in this truck are trying to steal it."

So all the thief has to do is pull a plug wire and use it for a coil wire....

pop your hood and look at the cowl, drivers side there is a factory hole the perfect size for a toggle switch, put that inline /w/ +to coil. it is accessible while the hood is closed, but u cant see it, hood poped, you have to be looking for it to see it.

I use a column lock on my K5. The other methods are good to use to but won't save your column if they break it. Thats what happened to mine. I had the heads off the engine and at the machine shop, they tried to steal it and obviously failed, but screwed up my column in the process. I don't know if anyone makes them anymore but sometimes you get lucky one ebay, or find someone on one of the forums that might be selling one.

About 15 years ago after my 68 Malibu was stolen by joyriders, I had my eye on one device that seemed pretty new but based on a good premise. What sealed the deal for me was when I found out a local car thief--err, former car thief--used it on his car. My 54 Plymouth was a popular car in the neighborhood but it was never stolen with the Grant Removable Steering Wheel system installed.

The removable steering wheel looks to still be available. But no trunk in the truck to stash it in.

The government approved immobilizers come with a small red flashing light that installers place on the dash near the steering wheel. The flashing light itself may deter some thieves.

remove battery including the bolts, electric fuel pump shut off, and a kill switch running off the neutral safety switch

Rig up a DPDT switch into the ignition and ignition module wiring so that the dizzy will trigger a second coil not hooked up to the engine but instead under the seat so it lights them up rather than the truck starting.

The easiest way to st up an "effective" kill switch is to break the neutral safety line. This prevents the motor from turning over at all.

Ive talked to a guy recently that used to steel trucks for a living. He recommended to me that first i shave the key lock, then install two kill switchs and get a alarm for tilt and sensor on the glass. and last but not least he said there was a collar that they used to sell that went over the the steering column(the name escapes me right now). If a thief wants it he will try and take it, just have to make it not worth thier time to steal.

some of the things he said were useless, removing the steering wheel, most alarms with only one horn, kill swithes on brakes cruise control.

If they want your ride bad enough there isnt much your going to be able to do. The removable wheel is probably your best bet unless there carrying around the corresponding part. No trunk take it in the house, at the store toss it under the seat. A missing wheel might just detour them enough to move on to the next ride rather then take a chance getting nabbed breaking in and looking for a wheel that might not be there. Where are they most likely going to nab your ride at home or at the store? Yeah these kids are probably stupid but they dont want to get caught they go for easy targets.
