Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

well we have the interior gutted inside and we are waiting for the seats. I was about to install the carpet and decided that a subbox needs to be built why it is all apart. So here is my idea.

Build a small wood frame around the rear of the rear wall. I believe there is an approx 6 inch indention behind the seat. So I figured a layer of dynamat and stretch fleece and resin it and cover in fiberglass. This will give me a nice slopped box completely glassed in the back using the rear wall of the truck as the rear of the box. Is this a dumb idea?
Also the plan is 2 Kicker L7 squares 2 complete sets of 4 inch MTX components in the LMC speaker headliner. The truck is a 79 C10. Any ideas would be great. I am ready to order this stuff please stop me if this is wrong

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

Umm sounds kinda dumb being the L7 is solobaric sub...requires 1.5 cu ft of air space and has a mounting depth of damn near 9 inches, plus the reprecussion of air could potentialy do one of two things either blow out any seam sealer in the cab or shatter the back window....honestly what I would do is just make an amp rack on the back wall of the cab and get two Kicker Slim line COMPVTs and put them firing upwards under the seat.

Mounting depth is 6 13/16, they will fit. But maybe I'll do a floor hole with a box underneath. We have an after market seat coming so I don't know how much room will be underneath the new seat.

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

You are gonna want a box, not the back of the cab. Without a box the cab wall will flex. a lot. for slim woofers you can do a JL tw5, or a rockford fosgate p3 shallow. Both are very good. getting a sub under might be a little tight.

EDIT: reading my post, I think i came off a little short, I wasnt trying to. If you have any more questions, hit me up. I have installed car stereo for 18 years. Im here to help

I have the 2 10 inch Shallows in my daily driver and let me tell you they sound awesome. You will not be disappointed if you get these, however I think I'm going MTX in the 86 not sure yet.

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

You wil need to move the seat forward considerably if you plan to use L7's. I have four 10's in my '85 with a 5.25" mounting depth and the seat is moved forward a couple inches. Any closer to the wheel and it would be too uncomfortable to drive, especially with the stock steering wheel.

My suggestion would be to get four shallow 12's and use the biggest amp you can fit under the seat. Its either that or its blow-through time...

Also, do you realize how many sets of mids/highs you would need to keep up with that? at the very least 3 if not 4 sets...

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

Okay well I have thought this out and have decided to look at outside help on this issue. I called my local stereo shop and the man seemed very knowledgeable and agreed to come by the school and help us figure it out. He suggested maybe bed rocking it. And also suggested we go with Digital Designs products instead of Kicker. I have read many good things about DD and was quiet impressed

I applaud your decision to go see a local guy. Me being a specialist in the car audio industry myself, can appreciate that. Having a bunch of people telling you how great something will sound is fine, but going to a shop where they have people who know what they are doing and have product to show is waaaay better.

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

if I was going to build a kick ass system with a standered cab truck I would cut the cab out, but if I wasnt going to keep the truck for a long time I would do something differant. I did a cut through on a mazda b-2200 years ago and the sound was 100% better then them just sitting behind the seat, alot of subs need room to move, if there is not enough room from the face of the sub to the rear or the underside of a seat the sub wont perform 100%. and do you really need to go with 12's or can you use 10's. 2 tens will pound pretty hard inside a truck cab.........

yeah i would hate to cut my cab too, i think i will have to deal with a lil bit less bass, but keep my truck in one piece.

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

when I first bought my c-10 i had 2 12" rockford's behind the bench seat, they were model he1 or something to that note. i got them real cheap at the stereo shop i used to work at they were a display and like two years old, and this was 6or 7 years ago. now they hit good....they were alittle muffled by the back of the seat.....thats why i went with buckets so i could get a sub in without cutting my cab up

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

well the desicion has been made. We have decided to go extreme with this. So the cab is being cut for a large bandpassbox in the bed. 2 (9500 series) Digital Design 15s or 18s depening on available airspace for the box. The shop is having an acustical engineer design the box for the truck. 2 DDM2a amps for the subs. 4 sets of 6.5 componets in the doors and tweeters mounted somewhere. 2 sets of 4inch speakers in the headliner for fill in. A DDSS4 amp to run the rest of the stuff. They have cut us a really good deal as it is a school project, but they are gonna do the entire install including all the wiring and dynamat the entire truck. He is also going to install 1 inch thick lexan across the top of the box to show off all the goodies inside. All speakers will be mounted into custom fiberglass enclosures in the doors and the box will be lit up with neons. Should be a show winner for sure. I will be sure to include pics of the setup as they go so I can keep this going. If anyone would like anymore info about prices and what not that it is costing for all of this just ask.

Re: Subwoofer Ideas Kicker L7's

Reading this post has answered some of the questions I had about my 76, since the next thing to tackle will be the interior. But I dont mind doing a cut through on the cab and bed, but I dont want to have to buy a bed cover to cover the box. Does anyone have any ideas about a box in the bed that can be shown and still look good? Ive thought of diamond plate welded up but it cost to much for a 17 year old making $7 an hour.
