Project "Purple Ice" The spare parts truck build has begun.

We drug this 68 long step home from North Georgia a few months ago just after an ice storm. There were narrow, steep driveways and very steep roads that were ice covered in our path. After 2 hours, a 4x4 jeep, a winch and some pretty scarry moments we had it moved 600 ft down his ice covered drive and the sheet of ice they called a road in front of his house, and loaded on the trailer.

It sat here for a while and we decided to see if we could build it with using mainly old, but good, used parts we had in inventory. It was a good cab to start with with minimal rust. The front clip was pretty banged up so we are going to put some replacement metal up there. We had a good engine and transmission so we have converted it to a V-8/automatic instead of the missing 6 cyl./3 speed it had at some point in its life.

We should hear it run by next weekend!

Re: Project "Purple Ice" The spare parts truck build has begun.

We heard it run today...and it sounded great!!! We had a fun filled day of digging out parts, figuring out harnesses, and creating a way to hang an alternator. A gas can, electric fuel pump and few fresh fluids later.....puring like a LION!!!!!!

Nice job David! I intended to pretty much do the same with the blue truck I bought from you, but that damn 6 banger won't die! It stills runs great, and since I put the 3.08 geared rearend in, it hauls down the interstate much better now.

Re: Project "Purple Ice" The spare parts truck build has begun.

We are on to the next stage of this project.....we mocked up the front clip, replaced the rocker and inner rocker on the passenger side and got the interior just about ready for paint. We will paint the interior in the next week or 2, install the automatic steering column and linkage and then it will be ready for the exterior paint.

Re: Project "Purple Ice" The spare parts truck build has begun.

I love that suburban ,saw it briefly at Canton at Williams Bros a while back. What area in Marietta do you call home ? I used to work all over Cobb County but never saw your rig down there. Years ago there was a yellow suburban near stilesboro road I wanted but was not for sale ,then it dissappeared.

Re: Project "Purple Ice" The spare parts truck build has begun.

I bought a 72 El Camino SS in that area about 7 years ago ,still have it too. My stable is too full right now for another ,I am currently driving a 72 shortbox beater and working on it when I can. Good luck on your current project ,it seems to be coming along nicely. It must be nice to know how and what to do on these trucks.

After dealing with the public (quite a few time wasters, looky Lous and tire kickers) trying to move some of the inventory I decided it would be way more fun to just take all the remaining parts and and build a few with the couple of bodies that remain. We have the the 68 long step going that will be for my neighbor, a 67 C-30 with working dump going on for board member orangecrush70 and we are blending 2 1970's to make a pretty decent short bed. Yep...still at it and they are all for sale!

Re: Project "Purple Ice" The spare parts truck build has begun.

It looks like the guy we were building this for has decided he wants one of the others we have in inventory...most of this truck will be sold shortly.

Long step bed with tailgate, frame, possibly cab. PM if interested.
