yet another summit mini starter Question
I need a mini starter due to my headers and was about to order one last night when I noticed in the pic that you can not see a solenoid, does it come with one or do you have to use your old one, also what is the difference with a Hitachi motor

Re: yet another summit mini starter Question
As far as I know, all of the Summit ministarters come with the solenoid. The Nippondenso or Denso style looks like there is no solenoid but it is actually built in. The Hitachi style looks more like the Chevy style with the separate solenoid mounted onto to it. I believe they will both function identically but that the Denso style may be a little more low profile. I have the red Procomp Hitachi style 3.0 KW ministarter that Skip White and GR8HOTRODS carry on Ebay and it works fine. My 93 Toyota pickup had a Denso style starter as oem. Eventually, I had to replace it, twice.

Re: yet another summit mini starter Question
My first one was DOA but GR8THOTRODS sent me another one with no problems and it works great. Skip White sells the same red Procomp one that I got from GR8HOTRODS. I think they are fine. No reason to pay more for a Summit brand one.

Re: yet another summit mini starter Question
The late 90's chevy starter gives more clearance than the hitachi style starters do.

Re: yet another summit mini starter Question
I ended up buying one from skip white and It didnt work, I called them, and to their credit, they provided great customer service and refunded my money. They also told me they were having alot of quality control issues with their mini starters and were in the process of finding a new supplier. I ended up buying a hitachi mini starter from checker, I am very happy with it and if I remember right it was about $110. Skip White might have since fixed the problems they were having with their starters but that was my experiance. I would suggest calling them and asking about it, good luck

Re: yet another summit mini starter Question
I'm very happy with the mini starter I picked up from Summit. As was already stated, the started came with solenoid attached. I had to get a shim kit from Autozone to get the proper clearance. I also used bolts that were slightly shorter than the ones supplied with the starter. The ones provided ran out of threads before I could fully tighten down the starter.

Re: yet another summit mini starter Question
as Hottrucks mentioned what is there for the BIG caddy's?
I have used the late model ones from chevy trucks (96-99 IIRC) and loved them on my SBCs. |
