Angry Clutch

Well guess what,

I installed a brand new clutch in my 72 K20, did everything by the book, started it up and the dumb clutch is making a terrible rattling/scraping sound right from the pressure plate. It does it whether its engaged or disengaged, and gets worse as the RPMs go up. Now I get to pull it all back apart, and I really need my truck. Frustrating!!

It sounds like you might have the clutch plate in backwards... One side should be stamped "Flywheel" or "Flywheel Side".

Re: Clutch

Sorry to hear that you have problems with the clutch you installed. Hopefully it is not anything major.

We installed a clutch in my '71 this weekend and luckily everything went ok. It was a real pain getting the engine in and I sure was not looking forward to pulling it back out or dropping the heavy 4 speed.

Good luck.

Re: Clutch

I'm sure the clutch plate is on the right way, but I guess I will find out. And, of course I have to deal with the transfer case as well as the heavy SM465.

Re: Clutch

did you replace the throwout and pilot bearings? both of those would change sound when the clutch was engaged/disengaged though....not sure what it could be. Let us know when you find out.

Re: Clutch

I had a sound something like that on my automatic- it was the dust cover rubbing against the flywheel.

Re: Clutch

I installed all new parts- pilot bearing, T/O bearing, pressure plate etc. I did have my original flywheel resurfaced, but I'm not sure how that could cause the noise. I also thought of the dust cover rubbing, but I pulled it off and ran it- no change. The noise is definitely coming from the pressure plate. Hopefully I'll get up enough energy to take it all apart this week and find the problem.

Re: Clutch

I just swapped in a 4spd from a TH350, brand new flywheel, brand new clutch kit and bearing, aluminum housing from a 60's chevy in great shape, the 4 speed was professionally rebuilt. Started it up and heard a noise like beans in a coffee grinder (well, how they sound at first). Same symptoms, but then it would go away and come back occasionally.

Before panicking and yanking it back apart I thought about it...

I shimmed the starter and the noise went away.

I found it easier to pull the motor on my 4x4s to do the new clutch. I also found the best place to buy new HD clutches In FT. Wayne. I have bought two of them brand new, not rebuilt ones, for around 100 bucks with everything included even the alignment tool. The local NAPA wanted close to 300. I have been real happy and if someone wants to know the place send me a PM and I would be glad to help.

Talking Re: Clutch

Guess what! I DID NOT put the clutch disc in backwards! I am sorta relieved, but now I have to take it back to the parts store and see about a replacement.

Smile Re: Clutch

Well, I finally got the clutch installed, and it works great. My parts guy exchanged the first one out, we still have not figured out what was wrong with it. This apparently was the first bad clutch he ever had come back. I am relieved to have this project done!
