Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
Most people don't think this is a car worth anything. I believe otherwise. This car always seems to come up as a joke, the 'what were they thinking' thing.

I was expecting to see a car with 5,000 reflectors stuck to it or something!

If that's a Rebel, then I am boatloads of envious man.
I dig those neat old AMC's, especially one with the pedigree like a Rebel! -Sam.

American Motors was thinking "...hey, this 'musclecar' thing looks pretty profitable. We should jump in..."

Actually I believe theat particular paint scheme was sold as the "Scrambler" or maybe "Rebel Machine".Fairly rare and usually loaded with Hi-Po options from what I remember.

Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
I think the "What were they thinking" question should be directed towards the Gremlin, Pacer and Matador. That car rocks! Love the R-W-B.

The Pacer is easy to explain. The Gremlin got knocked up by the Matador!

Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
Car has not run in quite a few years. I plan on tackling that first. Has the group 19 package from the factory; alum intake, bigger cam. bigger carb, etc. Should move pretty good with the 4 speed and posi rear. Solid car, all original, has not been abused, just neglected.

Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
That's an awesome car, I've always wanted one but have never seen one other than one time at a car show. I know it's a pretty rare car, I'd love to get my hands on one.
Please post a pic of the dash where it says "The Machine" I always liked the look of that. When I read the title of this thread, I was expecting to see the retarded looking cars sitting on 4X4 frames.

Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
I always thought those we cool. When they were new there were two in the Eugene Oregon area that raced heads up on bracket night. If I remember right didn't they have a 401? Used to be a guy down the street from me that was into AMC, he had one, a couple of AMX's, Javelins and an original Levi Gremlin.

Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
When I was 16 there was an old lady that drove a '70 model to the grocery store I worked at every now and then. It was an orange and black 390/4 speed car, and had been garage kept all its life. It was a very nice car, and I tried to buy it everytime I talked to her. She said it was her husband's toy, and he had passed away. She said she couldn't let go of it. After all these years I've always wondered what happened to it. Paint me a fan of it!

Re: Here's one from the "What were they thinking?" category
I love those things. I am a closet AMC fan, always wished i had the time/money to own and restore one. My faves are the SCRambler and The machine, and Marlins always intrigued me too as they have a similar look to a 66-7 Charger which i love too. Yea, i am a Mopar guy, with a bit of love for almost anything. Cool find!!
