crazy idea? seems so simple & makes sense...

...but I never heard of anyone doing it and cant figure out why:

exhaust manifold STUDS.. It would make installing my headers sooooooo much easier. Plus you wouldnt have to worry about stripping the threads out in the head...anyone done this? if not, why?

Unless I get a good god @#$% reason not to, Im so doing it while the engine is out..

oh, yeah. thats what Ive been doing today. complete engine teardown to find the gremlins inside.. so far, nothing obvious.. Might have to go all out with this next engine rebuild...

The best reason not to do this is that the heating and cooling of the heads will back the studs out of the heads. So studs will not hold any better than bolts. Also you will have a stud stuck out unless you cut them off.

why would a stud with a nut be affected by hot & cold any differently than a bolt?

Im not concerned about holding strength or whatever. Just ease of installation...

with doug thorley headers, theres 2 or 3 bolts that are a real bear to installl or remove...

reasons......not to.....
#1...my gaskets are designed to install the first and last bolt and drop in the gasket...engine already installed in truck....
with out having to unbolt at the collector....say to change a leaking gasket!!!!!...with studs can't do that....
#2 you put studs in will there be enough room to even pull it back to
get headers off studs...before hitting rails?????
then try to get the gasket in........

i am using esc copper gaskets,,with stage 8 s/steel 1" bolts for alum. heads......they rock...running 2" hooker super comp.headers for 71 chevelle, couple of plugs are behind the tubes..and the bolts the same way....one tube is 3/16" away from rail...studs would never work.....
you asked

in response to both #1 and #2, I already considered that.. The way my exhaust system is setup, I have a lot of movement at the headers, and space is not a problem in my '77 pickup.

Yea , for a couple of years. Just time for a change. The 88 Chevy wheel I put on has a totally different feel. Can really spin the wheel with one finger. Needed with a long bed. PS Nice Rig !

#3- pulling the heads off at a later day may be an issue.

Hey Markdoor,
Did those 71 chevelle supercomp headers drop in with no problems? Was there any need for frame modifications? I'm moving up to a 540 and don't see to many header options I like....need all the advice you can give me. Thanx, Jay

Oh and what size primaries are you running...or better yet, what's the part # of those headers?

I must be confused if 2 or 3 BOLT'S are hard to get in & out how will stud's help eliminate this?

It sounds to me like the tube bend's are interfearing with the install & removal of the bolt's so wouldn't there be a lack of room for a longer stud? making it just as hard to install a nut on it?

One last thing if you go with stud's try to find some non elastic self locking nut's instead of using lock washers under normal flat nuts.

Good luck
