Rusty Gas tank
started driving a truck that has been parked a few years. Fuel filter is plugging up quickly with rust. What is the best way to clean out tank? checked with radiator shop and they charge $150.00 to dip. That what a new one cost. Any help please? Gary

with the tank out and stripped and empty i'd start by using a pressure washer to blast around the inside of the tank to get all the loose stuff i could dislodge// the next step would be getting some pool cleaner stuff(muriatic acid) letting it soak a couple of hours// then rince with the pressure washer again after that i'd use an air hose or vaccume to blow air thru it to remove the moisture

I can't remember if it was on this forum or somewhere else, but someone had said draino works good. Pretty cheap too. Wish I could remember where I saw that...

Like cdowns said, I use Muriatic acid. It is cheap at any hardware store and it will sure enough get the crud out. Don't breath the fumes.

I usually use about a quart of acid and a few gallons of water. Cover openings with duct tape and slosh around. Repeat a few times until you're just getting clean water out.
Flush thoroughly with water hose. Be careful !

I have used acid also with good results. I have also put a piece of chain in the tank and slosh it around it helps to "scrub" the inside and take off the loose rust . my $.02
