It could only happen to me....

'79 c10, p/s pressure hose started leaking at crimped fitting, got a new one and the fitting going into the steering gear threads in all the way but the tubing still moves around (loose) anyone ever run into this? hose looks the same as old and after looking at the steering gear i dont see how the old one could 've ever tightened up. That end of the hose has a regular old flare on it but i dont see anything it would mate up to in the steering gear. Possible someone put a different year steering gear in?

Looks like someone put an '80-'87 style steering gear on my '79. Can i use a compression fitting to splice the 2 hoses together?

Rat, look down the hole the fitting was in. See if there is something that looks like a hollow point bullet and made out of brass at the bottom of the hole. There is no way on God's green earth it didn't leak without it, just NO WAY. The P\S system has to contain up to 2300PSI and without tat part the hose end flare has nothing to clamp to. Although rare, VERY RARE, the brass part could have siezed onto the steel part of the hose and gotten pulled out. Was the gearbox out of the truck? Equally as rare, it colud have fallen out or it could have poped out if you turned the wheel quickly with the hose off the gearbox. I never came across this in the 33 years I worked for GM, not even once. I don't know where you would get one either. NEVER use a compression connector of any kind on high pressure liquid P\S or brakes. It must be a double flare. Hope this helps. Jim

Re: It could only happen to me....

hi jim, yes i looked down the hole to see what the flare would mate up to and yes the hollow point thing is still there but way down in there, too deep for the flare to mate up. pulled the line of my '88 and the steering gear looks the same which should mean the '79 needs the same hose end as the '88? its also the same hose end for an '80-'87. can the tubing be welded together?

Re: It could only happen to me....

Rat, Happy Easter. Just for grins, assuming the 88 don't leak, try putting the hose you got for the 79 in the 88 and try to tighten it and see if it is OK. If it is the problem is with the gear in the 79. If not ok, the hose is the issue. In that case, compair the 2 hose ends (gear end) and see if the height of the flare nuts is different. Also check the nut on the other end of the new hose. VERY unlikely you might have the hose in backwards. I can see this happening IF the wingnut behind the counter gave you a hose for a vehicle with hydroboost. I don't know if you have unlimited phone, but if you want you can call me at 518-581-1622. I have unlimited so if you get your number to me I'll call you and we can go over this problem. Jim

Does the new line have the correct flare on it? Do you have an old hunk of line to compare it to?
