Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

Does any one know where to get new metal trim for the vent windows?
I have the new rubbers and my glass is still in good shape, but the metal trim around the glass has about a 1/2 long rust hole in it..

Thought about trying to braze it shut and paint it, but i would really like some new chrome.

Re: Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

Ecklers sells a reproduction assembly for those with deep enough pockets:
http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/product...r-_-136171-_-X

Perhaps other aftermarket suppliers sell the same thing a bit cheaper, but I've always had good results buying from Ecklers. About the only other option is trying to find better originals than you have out of a junk yard/abandoned truck, swap meet, yard sale or Ebay. In 7 years on Ebay however, I've only seen one decent chrome vent window assembly offered.

Re: Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

a pic would help, if you are talking the whole "c" chanel that holds the glass in place, you might be better off getting a whole new unit.
in order to replace that you will need to unbolt the bottom, and get a rivet kit to replace the top rivet.

The "c" channel is exactly what I'm talking about

You can see the rust out spot in the pic.. I know I can't weld it without burning the metal up. I was thinking I could braze it but I'm having my doubts. I know that I can buy the whole assembly from LMC etc.. it just a real kick in the junk to pay that much when all I need is a trim piece. I'm probably going to try to braze it anyway.. Oh well if nothing else I will have some extra glass for sale if someone has a broken vent window.

Re: Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

so, all you need to do is get a good used vent window assembly, or just that piece..
you can buy a rivet kit for the top pivot and rebuild your assembly with a new piece, or just rebuild an entire new assembly.
If you shoot alans classic a pm he might be able to tell you what page of his build thread the vent window rebiold is on, so you can see how it is done.

Exactly.. I saw alans rebuild thread.. good info. Just been racking my brain trying to find the c channel piece.. I'm going to attempt to fix what I got.. If unsuccesfull I will just source down a used one.

Thanks anyway guys.

We sell the same assemblies but even if you have some rusted ones if you cannot get a good used frame you can cut the bad sections out and weld in good sections from another set. I have done this and had them chromed. The only thing is last time I did it it cost $70.00 per pair for chroming. I bet their is someone here that has a good set

I thought about welding a new section in but that's some pretty thin metal, and my Whamodyne welder isn't that great (Really I'm just not that good at welding) I'm pretty sure I would just burn through it. I did get some leads on used windows so I'm just going to go that route and save myself the trouble..

Re: Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

you can't post for sale ads unless you are a site supporter, per the rules......

something else you could try is get a piece of copper pipe, flatten it out and hold it behind the channel while you weld the hole shut, or weld in a replacement piece of metal. the weld won't stick to the copper and will make it much easier to weld with out burning through the metal.

Re: Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

It is already rusted out so why mot try to weld it, you need a replacement any way so you can't loose you can only win.

Re: Beginning to think I'm SOL... (vent window)

It sure would be nice to see some these aftermarket companies give the 60-63 trucks some love and manufacture chrome window and vent surrounds for our trucks as well. They rare as hen's teeth. Some dude on Ebay had a full set last month but he decided to sell all 4 pieces individually. I dropped him a note telling him what I thought of his plan. If they were just regular painted steel surrounds, fine. But with rare parts how can you realistically win all 4 auctions?

It seems the market for 64-66 parts is barely catching up to the 67-72 market. I guess it depends on the demand. The people on ebay are trying to make money and how he decides to sell his parts are entirely up to him. If someone really wants the parts they'll buy them.

Hi Alan I didn't think about it till now but even though Rhoff2009 had 42 posts he may not have known who you were or where the parts section was, but then if he didn't know he could have asked I guess. Anyway I hope he found what he needed....Vernski
