transmission help!

ok, so this past saturday i was headed out to the beach which is about 50 miles or so from where i live. once i made it to my destination i noticed smoke coming from under my truck but couldnt locate the source. i made the trip back home fine, and hadnt moved my truck for another 2 days. today as i was leaving for work i cranked her up and when as i was reversing i noticed a large pool of trans fluid where she sat. i looked under the truck and notice that it was coming out pretty quick? any ideas of what i should be aware of????

i will be taking her to a shop tomorrow, but i don't wanna be screwed over by not having any knowledge on transmissions in general. could it be just the gasket seals??? i have noticed a small jerk when trying to speed up on the freeway in overdrive. this has been happening for 3 months now. could this be related????

Re: transmission help!

HTX, you don't give a year or trans model, but you did say overdrive so I'll make an ass oue of myself and assume it's a 700R4. These transmissions run a somewhat higher cooling\lube circut pressure and did at times blow the converter hub seal out of the front pump. It is supposed to have an extra seal retaing clip that goes over the seal and locks over the hub. You can fix this yourself. Drop the trans, remove the converter, pop the seal out install new seal and retainer. This is the most common high volume loss problem. I have seen cases crack at the bottom front, servo outer seals, speedo adapter, cooler lines and the filler tube seal. Jim

Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.

Re: transmission help!

Thanks alot mr. Mcclure from saratoga springs, but could it really be that simple? It is the 700r4 tranny (good guess by the way). If you say its known for this problem is there anyway to prevent it from happening in the future?

Re: transmission help!

HTX, see, 33 years of spinning wrenches I did manage to learn something and being a good guesser must have been one of them. LOL. The seal replacement (converter hub) is that simple. The hard part is the R&R work that goes before and after the repair. IF, and I mean IF, the seal is leaking and you replace it make sure the seal comes with a new retainer, and when you put the retainer on, rotate it just a bit so it isn't riding where the origional one was. Your going to have to drive it on, just don't smash the crap out of it in the process. How far are you from Sheperd TX? I may be down there in the coming month. Jim

Re: transmission help!

hey Jim, you were right on about everything. (very impressive) unfortunately, I live in an apt complex so i couldn't do a job this large. I ran it to a shop that I have been using for a few years now and the guy said he could have it done in a few hours. kind of pricey though.... $285.00 (its my daily driver so i had no choice)
about a 2 hour drive/ 75miles from sheperd texas.
THANKS A MILLION JIM

Re: transmission help!

HTX, please e-mail me your e-mail address. My girlfriends dad lived in Shepord when he died about a week ago. She is down there now trying to sort things out and then we will go down and bring out all the stuff thats hers now. I'm not exactly sure when we will be down, but for sure it will be this month. Reason I am making this request is just in case something goes wrong I'll have someone there I could get some help from. Bob has offered to be a touch point in the northeast and it would be great if I had a few safe havens along the way. I'll fill you in more when you write. I am glad I could help you out with your truck $285 isn't a bad price to R&R a trans and replace the front seal, especially if it's 4WD. Have a great day, Jim
