Disc Brake Swap...again

I'm sure its been asked on here a thousands of times before me, but I can't seem to find the parts needed to make it happen. I have a 67 c-20 and want to put some discs up front. I would like to run some aftermarket drop spindles, but hoping to come up with the rest from a junk yard or local parts truck. If I remember correctly the years to look for is 73-87 (correct me if I'm wrong). And what, ball joints, tie rod ends, rotors if there good, calipers...what am I missing?

Re: Disc Brake Swap...again

if it was me I would purchase the whole front section with the cross member and all and just bolt it all up onto my truck instead of having to put it all back together in steps and I believe your correct on the years that are the same setup

It'll all bolt up with factory holes, or would that include some hole drilling? No problem drilling holes just wanting to know what kind of work id be in for.

yep its all bolt on if you unbolt the cross member of 3 bolts on each side of the frame then you should be good to go on that. shouldnt need to drill at all

Use caution and be sure to make sure you know exactly what year the assembly came from. This will only help if you intend on doing any balljoint replacements. And if you buy it from someone make sure they tell you as well. Trust me 3 months and i think i might actually know what it is that i am working with.

Re: Disc Brake Swap...again

another option would be going with a 88-98 spindle setup. you could use your control arms, just need the 88-98 ball joints, and tie rods. Then you could have your choice of 5 or 6 lug rotors. I see those drop spindles for sale used pretty frequently on some of the other boards.

Re: Disc Brake Swap...again

I am in a similar position. I have a 68 that i want to put disks on. I have a 72 doner that i'd like to pull the parts from. Will a 72 to 68 transplant work?

I just did this on my 67, installed 72 5 lug disks, I swapped over the control arms and hub assy no problem.
now for both you and corcor (who started the thread), dont forget your brakes! you'll have to swap over to the newer brake lines. and your steering rack assy will have to swapped over as well. 67-70 front end steering components will not work with the disk brake set up.
corcor, are you converting to half ton? you didnt mention if you were or not

Re: Disc Brake Swap...again

Wouldn't mind going 5 lug to increase rim options, but don't think I will. What's involved in swapping rear to 5?

Re: Disc Brake Swap...again

you could either order 5 lug axles from ece or find a 71 72 rear end with coil spring. I doing the axle swap from a 72 and now the rear lines up with the front end just fine. if you go with the ece axle swap, youll notice the front end is now wider than the rear.
